Before they were the World's Greatest Toy Company, Mego had humble origins as an impulse toy supplier. Their methodology was effective and based on giving the stores a 10% advertising credit based on the amount purchased, this would help sell through on the modestly priced toy selection. This sort of business was referred to as the "Basement Department", no doubt acknowledging the area of the department store you could find such goods.
In his interview with the Museum, Former VP Neal Kublan mentioned that in the late sixties, this way of business was in jeopardy whennewspaper advertising began to become prohibitivly expensive and Mego began to seek other forms of revenue, the rest is history.
