I'm ambivalent about the whole thing. On the one hand, it's nice to see a beautiful ceremony amid interesting architecture with all the pomp and circumstance and happy people. It's living history we're watching unfold before our eyes. On the other, it bothers me that the wealth on display was largely derived from centuries of leeching off working people, and that the position the royals have isn't derived by merit or hard work, but by the luck of being born into the right family.

          They are nothing but freeloaders.

They ain't my queen, king, prince...or whatever.

Sorry...America fought hard to get rid of that crap.

I can't really muster the same bile towards the royal family that I could when I was an angrier, younger man. To me they're basically full-size, very expensive Mego dolls.
Personally, I went to the movies to avoid the coverage, but I don't begrudge royalists who enjoy the spectacle and tradition.

As far as cruel elites such as the oil companies and their ilk go, at least the royals perform ceremonial and ritual functions, like high-end reality TV personalities. They live off the fat of the land.. but they do have to sing for their supper.

No one does pomp and pageantry like the Brits, and last night didn't disappoint! It was a big deal here in Australia for many people (mostly the ladies ), after all they are our Royal Family too. The Queen is "Queen of Australia" and of course she is still our Head of State.

I'm a republican (around 45% of Aussies are at last count) but I'm happy for it to happen when it happens. I think it makes perfect sense for the UK to keep the Royals, as the cost of maintaining them is repaid many times over in tourism, plus the other less tangible feel-good benefits such as the obvious joy derived by millions of people from the weddings etc over the years.

Apart from all that it's nice to see a young couple tie the knot, us old married folk shouldn't be the only ones to suffer should we?

Yes, France's absolute monarchy was done away with, never to return. Although Napoleon later declared himself emperor, which in a sense restored a form of monarchy to the country, in all but name.

For England, after the execution of King Charles I, and after the implementation of the Republic which governed Britain for some years,
the monarchy was restored following The Wars of the Three Kingdoms, for better or for worse.

Admittedly, the royal family and all the bombastic pageantry that surrounds it brings in millions in tourist revenue to the country.
But yes, we the tax payer have to fund much of the royal family's lifestyle.

The Queen is doing her best during this recession, though.
She has cancelled the Christmas party held for her staff every year, and she will be ordering cheaper Christmas crackers for her own festivities.

Now who says she doesn't care?

It would be easier to show respect to Royalty if their citizens weren't struggling with unemployment, trying to pay their rent, heating and health bills, etc. I'd rather see all that money go to sick children than to people who think fox hunting is something they simply can't do without.
                        Respect is a two-way street...
                        .
                        .
                        .
"When things are at their darkest, it's a brave man that can kick back and party."

England is as broke as the US I can't believe the money that was spent, If I lived over there I would be bothered at the wastefullness of it .Glad I'm not the only one not interested.

If we can stage something like that just months before we stage the Olympics then i don't accept that we have no money in this country, we must have loads.
