Why are all Americans called "Yankees" outside the U.S.?

Most Americans associate it as a Civil War term as a geographic location seperated by the Mason/Dixon line which is along the Maryland/Pennsylvania border.

Regional pride is very strong throughout the U.S. and I can imagine some Americans from the Deep South being called a "Yankee".

I think the term "Yankee" started to be associated with all American's during the Revolutionary War.

During the Civil War it changed (in house) to mean only the Union.

Outside the USA the term is still held over from Revolutionary War days covering everyone from the US

Easy touch means easy to rip off, get what you want, just ask for it and they will give it you, that sort of thing.

People flock to the UK and grab everything they can from the benefits system that runs here and succesive governments allow it to happen.

NEWSFLASH: Belgium is even worse on that department, been so for many years. There's just no stopping the immigrants. Nothing against them, if only they would get a job in stead of leaching of the system

Once you've experienced the British National Health System it's easy to see why people flock here, it's second to none and it's free!!!

We're sooo tolerant that the main language of our capital is no longer our own. 60% of all people living in the capital are North African.

On the upside, you never have to leave the country to go on vacation...

I wonder when they made that rule? Henry VIII's daughter Mary remained Catholic and became Queen of England.
