I don't think it a version of the Doctor that is the first or before because as palitoy states Clara saw all of his past faces. It could be that if he is the McGann Doctor once he chose to end the Time War with the Daleks the way he did ( wiping out the Time Lords and the Daleks ) he to do it as someone not the Doctor and Clara only his past as the Doctor. I think he is still technically the President and maybe he ended the Time War as the "President".


Here is what is said in the show.

(Matt Smith ) I said he was me, I never siad he was the Doctor. The name I chose was the Doctor, the name you choose is like a promise you make. He's the one who broke the promise.

(Hurt) What I did I did without choice
(Matt) I know
(Hurt continuing) in the name of peace and sanity.

Problem with the "old McGann" theory (and it was my first guess too) is that Clara states she saw 11 faces.

My first impression was that the Hurt character was the Valeyard - the version of the Doctor that went bad and broke his vow ( how did they phrase that in the show? ) I also thought it might be the 8th Doctor ( McGann's Doctor only older ) because he would have been the one to end the Time War and commit genocide on the Daleks - also breaking the vow. I say he would have been the one to do that because in Rose when the Doctor see himself in a mirror he stops to check out his new look and I can see that ending the Time War might bring on a regeneration. So this could be a way of dealing with the McGann Doctor without using McGann.

It would.... but I could see it. The Master runs out of regenerations almost immediately, so it's possible he IS the Valeyard; the Doctor's final regeneration.... up until he starts stealing bodies and messing with reality and they decide Time Lords aren't limited to thirteen regenerations. It kinda messes with the old 80's semi-official idea that the Monk was an earlier incarnation of the Master.

If you go back to the beginning of the scene where she sees Troughton, watch (I had to frame-by-frame it on TiVo), you’ll see someone run past her before Troughton does. His face is mostly out of frame, but the coat and collar are clearly supposed to be McGann’s Doctor.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I rewatched and paused it right after the initial broadcast, and it's definitely meant to be McGann.

I think you're right. The Pertwee scene might also be when the scoop was trying to catch him and transport him to Gallifrey for the games. I hope they release the soundtrack for this season soon. I loved the score for that intro of the finale`.

Knight Errand - I'll take your word for it but my point is more that he is the one classic era doctor who it doesn't matter that he is older because there was never a regeneration scene so he could be used in the new show including casting him to actually film a scene rather than a half baked stunt double shot.

I’ll be honest: although he really does have some interesting ideas, I find him to be one of the most overrated writers ever.

Not so fast . . . they’ve shown his face in every regeneration “retrospective” the new show’s done. And he was in the “Clara saving all the Doctors” scene, but you had to be quick to catch it. I did too. It wasn't super-chocolatey-awesome; but it was entertaining.

They did that before though.... when all his sidekicks like Sarah Jane and the Torchwood gang had to step in to stop bad guys he already had.... and you saw them die off one by one. It was the one where Donna had accidentally not met him 'cos the monster changed her timeline.

I REALLY liked that bit, 'cos I think it'd be great if they kept the idea that she was his one great love. I HATE when they keep tacking on romances to a story, like they keep doing/hinting at with the Doctor. It cheapens the whole thing. One thing I liked about this season was that.... up until the Cyberman episdoe.... they really hadn't played up Clara as a love interest. (Thank you, Gaiman.)

Also forgot to mention; That whole teaser intro narrated by Clara in the season finale. Do you think they could add that as a prologue to every episode from now on so it would annoy Mikey like the Amy Pond narration did?
