Well, that was interesting.
It was disclosed some weeks ago that John Hurt would be appearing in the 50th anniversary episode in November, but I didn't expect to see him in tonight's episode.
We know what character he's playing now, anyway!
It was cool to see the classic Doctors.
And Clara's identity/purpose was more or less what I expected.
Six months to wait to find out what happens next.PUNY HUMANS!Comment

not a great one. once again Paul Mcgann is slighted by the new show now the question is... is this John Hurt the older 8th, the valyard or something else
Mikey called it right about River and the convoluted plot device for Clara.
and once again Moffat shows he needs an editorComment

I really enjoyed it and boy did it set up a new question for everyone one it answered. I think this review sums my my feelings very well. Bring on November!

I fell slighted. Could you imagine a season with John Hurt as the Doctor!!! Even if he plays an evil version, John Hurt as the Doctor would be Incredible!!!
Odd thing is Up till now, I forgot that Future River was/is dead. She sure gets around for dead woman trapped in a computer mainframe.Comment

great episode. i got the impression Hurt is an earlier version of the Doctor, perhaps his original life before he became the doctor?Comment

>I got the impression he existed before the first Doctor
Mmmmaaayyybeee.... but they did make a point of explaining that to a time traveller before/after is a difficult concern. I'm kinda thinking he's the Valeyard.... maybe this whole thing providing his origin. (since in the old series he just kinda shows up....)

SPOILERS, SWEETIES!!!!!!
I must say, I really liked this story.
I thought it was a great idea (the tomb of the Doctor), and I found the dying Tardis actually quite a moving image. The Great Intelligence going through the Doctor's time stream and undoing all the victories is a spectacular idea (can't imagine anyone topping that), and now all the Claras actually make sense.
I think that John Hurt won't take over as the Doctor (even though I'd love to see that happen), I think he'll last one or two episodes (as did Derek Jacobi).
I think Hurt is the final Doctor.
My only disappointment, is that the old Doctors were really "pasted in", it all didn't blend very well. But I do realize it was a hard trick to pull off. I wish they had found better matching material.
And making us wait six months? Come on!
All things considered, I thought it was a good story. Thanks Mr. Moffat!Last edited by Gorn Captain; May 19, '13, 10:05 AM..

I enjoyed the story and thought it easy to follow, it's pretty much what I thought was going on with Clara. The classic Doctor pastes were hit or miss but the Hartnell scene (and the Tardis in raw state) was magnificent.
Other highlights for me were Strax discovering Scotland, the Valeyard reference, the Tardis being a tomb and River now being a ghost.
Surprised they showed so much of the sixth Doctor and I loved the little bit with the Troughton double, some of those guys nailed the walk well.
Not sure what to think of John Hurt as the Doctor, wish I didn't have to wait six months, the fan conjecture will likely grow tiresome.Places to find PlaidStallions online: https://linktr.ee/Plaidstallions
