STAR TREK is BACK !!!!!!!!!!!!

I went and saw it last night at the drive in. I absolutely loved it....it's right up there with Wrath of Khan. The atlernate timeline bit is explained well and all of the cast was great. Karl Urban really nailed De Kelly. He sounded just like him. Simon Peg as Scotty was casting brilliance. I just wish they had more of Scotty in the movie. I'm sure he will have a much expanded role in the next one.

Look at Titanic...it didn't brake any records in the beginning...but look at its final box office tally...word of mouth does wonders for films.

Well...I saw it at the noon showing yesterday in IMAX...but waited to write my review to give myself time to process my thoughts and feelings about it.

I decided I have to break it down to to catagories..."what is"...and "what it isn't".

What it isn't: It isn't not Bill Shatner, Nimoy, Kelly and the rest. I'm with Mike on this one...they can NEVER be replace, they ARE those Characters! They are my old Friends that I grew up with...and this new Movie can't ever erase that! I've heard Shatner called a bad Actor...RUBBISH! Shat is the Man!!Shatner IS Captain Kirk!! And that deep voice of Nimoy's is distinctly his own style....he IS Spock!! And DeForest Kelly...well, I think they might have Cloned him for this Movie!

What it is: It Is STAR TREK on a GRAND SCALE!! Star Trek LIVES I loved this movie more than I can put into words! I am really impressed with the dialog in the script...how they managed to include CLASSIC lines said by the Characters without it seeming forced. The dialog is only included as fits the characters personalities...and the Actors NAIL their parts PERFECTLY!!

And one fact comforts me in enjoying this Movie guilt free(without feeling like I'm betraying my old Friends)...is the alternate reality that is created...means ALL the original history still exists. So...these really are the NEW voyages of the Star Ship ENTERPRISE!!!!!

New Life

My wife and I saw Star Trek this afternoon. She liked it. The only problems she had with the movie were 1) The thing between Uhura and Spock, and B) Chekov's accent. She thought both were stupid. She liked everything else.

She's more of a Next Generation fan than a TOS fan. But she LOVED Iron Man - we saw it three times before we realized we were in a recession...

And she's liked all the Marvel and DC movies so far. She liked Superman Returns and both Fantastic Four movies.

I'm thinking I might be able to talk her into going to see it again maybe once or twice more before Night at the Museum and Transformers 2.

If you liked Star Trek, or are having trouble with the story, let me highly recommend Star Trek: Countdown. It is a prologue that focuses on Spock and Nero. With appearances by Picard and Data (B-4?)

(I wonder if Nero is meant to be more of a force of nature, or a metaphor of sweeping change, rather than a classic villain like Khan...in a philosophical Star Trek way...)

I saw it last night with my wife and 5 year old son(she loved it,my son didn't get board and followed the story"thats good").I wanted to take time before I posted about it(so I could give a well rounded review).That said...I'm sure every one knows I'm a huge fan of trek and get inside info some times.As I said in my other post...the studio wanted to give trek a good shot at success and correct some mistakes.They succeeded but have side tracked 40 plus years of trek history(but old history can be restarted...I will elaborate in a few)So the question was "greatest movie ever made"....NO....best trek....close(this is what "the motion picture" should have been like"which I liked")"wrath of Kahn" and "first contact"are my faves.The sequel has potential to be the best if they change some stuff.Read on for my pros and cons.Treks future is BRIGHT!!!

They really went through the last 40 years of trek and picked a lot of good stuff out!
The story line was good...a lot of thought put into it...I'm not happy that they erased every thing(history) after Kirk"s birth...it now only exists in a parallel time line in space time...events from the old time line will repeat in the new time line(in one form or another)....but now that old Spock mind melded with young kirk and spoke with young Spock,what happens in their future can be changed(Spock melds with McCoy in"wrath"..."remember")...Kirk should have old Spock's memories.... Kirk knows how he dies.....romulus doesn't get destroyed....Nero doesn't go back in time....history reboots!!!...time lines merge....parts of the past old time line return to history(more good than bad one would hope).So for now we all can enjoy the all new adventures with our old friends.

The actors were all good...the new relationships should be fun.Loved that Pike makes it to admiral(his trust in Kirk saved the federation!)I thought it would have been better for Pike to keep the enterprise as his flag ship with Kirk as his first officer for now(a little more believable in my opinion).
I'll get used to the new look of the enterprise...loved that they used elements from the 60's Pike's ship along with the more "our future" look for the interiors...but PLEASE!!! they have to stop with the BS of using factory interiors for the look of the engineering levels...it's so UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

Destroying the entire Vulcan civilization was a bit much...it's a little far reaching(okay destroy Vulcan but make it that the original home world was destroyed not most of the people...that way one of their colonies would be the new Vulcan home world with millions of it's people still around)and killing Spock's mother JUST WRONG! the end result could have been achieved another way.I did like that Spock's father validated Spock's love for his mother(this will make Spock's character less troubled,which will be a GOOD THING!)

Lets hope this is the last movie or story arc that has earth being destroyed as a plot element for a while.Its been done in every series and 3 movies before.

All in all this movie was a WINNER.They just have to be a little more creative next time and NO!! TOS redo's please.They have at least 5-10 years of pre TOS era to play on.

The characters were all there and I truly loved the experience.

I'm an ardent TOS fan, hate the spin offs terribly (the animated show is fine) but this was my Star Trek again, I've missed it.

It's a great ride. I can't believe they pulled off such a tribute to the original series while simultaneously erasing it. This movie will have legs as word of mouth spreads. I have no major quibbles with it. The best thing I can say about it is that it made me wish that i was a bigger Trek fan all along.

I am really glad to see that there is a lot of people here whom like the new Star Trek movie. I admit I was and still am a bit skeptical as I have yet to see it for myself. I am so used to movies getting hyped up only to be let down at the theatres time and time again. I do not even get my hopes up any more. Every now and then a good movie still happens though. I like reading all of your reviews. Keep them coming!

I have to say I disagree with you on this. Future Spock didn't share "ALL" His memories with young Kirk...only what Kirk needed to see(the Super Nova destroying Romulus...and Nero & Spock being sucked into the blackhole)...so that young Kirk would know he was telling the truth.

I can't find my wig! (So I just ordered another one!!) My sister said, please don't embarass me...but I am going to see it in my Uhura outfit next weekend in SF at the IMAX there. I'm going to totally geek out and I don't care.

Im looking foward to see it with the kids this weekend on IMAX. We always get Geek'd out and throw parties for premiere's like these. Any chance of seeing a picture of Jess "All Geek'd out" with Uhura wig and outfit at the IMAX there. You go girl..........

I can definitely give you a review that is more than "sweet fluff," BUT that objective critique would ultimately say this is is one heck of a movie!

Rather than just repeat what's in the the other threads I will say this was extremely respectful of the sprit of the series and the characters. Yes, it changed the backstory, but it did so in ways to create an exciting new adventure for the characters we love.

Ultiamtely, if you're going to take on the monumental task of remaking an iconic piece of culture, you need to make some changes. Let's face it, these things are usually iconic because they were so amazing in the first place. There is NO reason to just redo it exactly as it was dopne when it was done so very well the first time around. If it is worth redoing, it has to be done in an original way, but with the spirit and feel that made the original so great.

I thin kthe challenge for the sequels will be to make the same type of social statements TOS did with the same level of action and great characters as bothe the series and this movie has so wonderfully done.

Now if the if the original backstory is sacred to you (and I'm not being sarcastic, I realize the importance of the show for some), then you most likely hated this movie long before it was ever made.

I didn't get a chance to see it because of various sporting events and Mother's Day.

I wouldn't be surprised if this weekend exceeds opening weekend since I'm sure there are many people in the same boat as me.
