I'm still w/ Mike on this one, only I'll wait til it comes on TV and I'm bored outta my mind. I hated those little clips that were posted. Not a chance I could sit through the whole movie.

Great, it's Mothers Day on Sunday and my wife invited guests for Saturday night, would it be rude if I just put on my coat and said "going out"?
Grab your son to take along and just say "Honey, I thought the best Mother's Day Gift I could give you is a little peace and quiet."
That's my plan but don't know if it will work. I love going to a movie where the audience is completely psyched...clapping and cheering when the movie is over. Something that can't be experienced at home.

Darklord, Adam West...you guys are right. If this movie is good it must be seen with an enthusiastic audience. I wonder if I should see it in my neighborhood or cross the bridge and watch it in the City...?? I'll check it out and see where it's playing and maybe see it this weekend.
Did anyone here see this movie yet that doesn't think it's the greatest movie ever made ?
I'm not knocking it (because I haven't seen it) .... I'd just like a more well rounded review.
All i'm getting from this thread is sickly sweet fluff
It's not a perfect movie, not the greatest movie ever made. What we all are reacting to that it is a real quality, solidly vivid take on the Trek universe that seems to reactivate the new energy it had in the 1960's.
T1K and Hardygirl, even if you are not hopped up to see this new movie, don't wait until it comes to video, see it down the line at a dollar theater. There are some really nice visuals that should be seen big.
T1K, actually I was waiting on you to provide that well-rounded review.
(No, I'm not being sarcastic.) I'm curious of your honest, as-objective-as-you-can-be opinion of it.

Same here! I really want you to watch it...and I'm very interested in your opinion. But try to view it with an open Mind.
Right now, 15 smackers is a little too much to throw away on a movie for me.
You're right the Money Mike...that is what costs! We just got our 1st IMAX in Maine, it's $14.00 day of night. But hey...I've never been to one, plus...it's STAR TREK!!
I just saw it for the second time tonight. I saw it by myself this morning, and with friends this evening.
I will agree its fun, and full of energy and action like good old Trek should be...Damn the technobabble, lets git er' done type of stuff. Despite some of the points I am about to bring up, it was really a fun film, and is far more classic Roddenberry Trek than Ahbrams and the commercials would have you believe. (They could have layed off a bit on the Trek II quotes though. I had to explain them to the people I was with afterwards).
It is Trek, and it is fun. Like revisiting old friends for the first time.
The actors chosen played their parts well.Very well...excellent in fact. Urban must be Kelley reincarnate, because he was dead on perfect. (We finally learn where the nickname Bones comes from in a great little comment by the new guy!) Despite all the gobbledy gook being spread around about making the parts their own, most of the cast chose to keep their footsteps firmly planted in their predecessors tracks. Notable exceptions being Sulu and Uhura, who were given more to do. Theres no way a Shatner lead cast would have been allowed to get away with some of the things going here...and the franchise is better for it. Sulu gate a chance to shine action wise, without being subservient to Kirk, and Uhura...well, I wont ruin that for those who havent seen this yet. Chekov gets to be the boy genius he was originally set up to be in the original series.
That said, this film isnt perfect.
First, the villian. I wish Russell Crowe had taken the part of Nero.I think he might have pulled it off better. Bana was ok, but needed to be phenomenal to pull off his character. Especially since most of the back story got chopped (but will be back on the DVD?). I just didnt buy him as the hell bent for revenge villian. He came off as more of a guy with nothing better to do. Granted, the villians werent given the best of character building moments. I cant say more than that without giving away plot.
After an action packed opening bit, we go to what I thought was the worst and most contrived parts of the movie. Again, I will try and abstain from giving anything away. Lets just say the Spock parts where great, the Kirk/Kobayashi parts (with the exception of McCoys intro) were cringe worthy at times. Luckily, when the action picks up again things get way better. I know they had a lot of characters to introduce, but they kinda just shot them all out of a cannon at once, with everybody going from cadet to officer in mere moments.
Nimoy Spock/Scotty/Transporter....Yeah...right. What do we need starships for if this can be done!!
The phasers---Aargh. When the sequel is made, lose the shiny "Pew Pew" (thats the sound they now make )phasers and go back to the original series ones please!
Engineering/secondary hull---Yuck. I spent many years working in the valve/actuator industry. I didnt find oil refineries, water treatment plants, or breweries very futuristic, yet here, they stand in for engineering and Starfleet ship yards--concrete floors and all--with minor changes to "suspend" our belief. As with the phasers, please come up with something better for the sequel.
The Enterprise.---I want to like it, but I cant. The ship looks out of balance with the nacelles tight and straight up like that. The old ship had flow and balance. This new one lacks it....looks really wobbly to me. Luckily, the shots are done so fast before the perspective changes this doesnt take away from the action..for most folks anyway.
As is the case with anything these days, the action scenes are sped up, and choppy. You have to really keep your eyes on the ball to see everything thats going on. Plus, those STUPID sparkles and flashes drove me nuts. Again, I know thats the style now, but there has to be a time and place for everything....Little less pixie dust please!
For those worried about the canon stuff getting trod on...well, it does. That said, it is done in a logical way for the most part, that is explained away very well in the film. It was a good move having old Spock almost as confused by it as we old Trekkies are.
Good film?--Yes. Definitely worth seeing. It signals an end to the politically correct Trek nonsenes of the last twenty years, and a return to action, adventure, and a girl chasing, swaggering old tin plated Jimmy T.
Best Trek?--Nope. But there is definitely promise here. Cant wait for the sequel. This sucker is going to make money, and deserves to.
I can't find my wig! (So I just ordered another one!!) My sister said, please don't embarass me...but I am going to see it in my Uhura outfit next weekend in SF at the IMAX there. I'm going to totally geek out and I don't care.
