As far as I was concerned, those publicity shots "were what they were"
---not great thinking I guess---sure, it's kind of silly to take STAR TREK
photos as if they were promoting a teen dramedy flick----they shoulda got
the BATMAN BEGINS guys to take the promo pics

Anyways----cool to hear the trailer is being recieved more positively
    than the pics.

I saw it this weekend when I saw the new Bond film.

    Here's the thing...

I went with a group of friends and aquantances. One of the guys is sitting next to me on my right. He's my age. When the Trek trailer started playing, he was (rather loudly) making comments like 'ah man, I can't believe they brought that show back', 'that's the suckiest show of all time', so on and so forth (I count this guy as an aquantance, not a friend)

But sitting next to me on my left were two friends who are both sixteen. Typical teens, big video game freaks, that's all the talking about before the movie started. In fact, when the lights started dimming, I and the rest of our group were starting to wonder whether they were going to keep yapping about the video game crap during the whole movie.

Anyway, when the Trek trailer started, they both got real quiet. They weren't standing up and cheering or anything, but at the end they both indicated they though it looked kinda cool.

Thing is, I think people from my generation either like or love Trek (like me) or they absolutely hate it (like the jerk on my right). They are who they are and nothing going to change their minds. Ironically, if this movie was called anything other than Star Trek he probably would've thought it was cool.

I think Abrams is going after the younger generation like the two teens on my left who really don't know much about Trek haven't formed a strong opinion about Trek one way or the other. Whether it'll work or not, we'll have to wait and see.

As for me, yeah I got a bit of a tingle, but I'm keeping my expectations low. I'll go see it.

Hey, the Bond movie I saw is nothing like the Bond I grew up with and love. But like these new Bond movies for what they are, largely because of Daniel Craig. If the actors are strong in this, it might be the same thing. It'll never replace the Trek I grew up with and love, but I might find something I like, we'll see.

The transporter effect is interesting looking. Ditto crew ladies in mini-dresses and gogo boots.

The villain looks like a reject from Babylon 5 though. Ick.

Not bad. Looks much better than those publicity shots lead you to believe. I did get a bit of the tingle there. Not sure how it works in with past Trek (if it eve does) but I'm willing to give it a shot based on this.

I have a silly question. Why are they building the Enterprise on the Earth. If they have dry docks in orbit why not build it there. I know that is probably a minor little thing since starships in themselves are a suspension of dis-belief. But how many resources must be used to keep the thing from falling over from gravity?

Ironically... the classic series Spock is actually in the movie.

With respect Mike---I couldn't help drop that one.

    Yuck.

The car stuff in the beginning was lame. The rest didn't feel like Trek at all. This looks to be the first Trek I don't see in the theater. That's ok with me- JJ Abrams in may interviews claims to have never been a Trek fan. I am.

That was set AFTER this movie.
The difference must be that in Piece of the Action, that car was a stick-shift. In the trailer it must be an automatic.

Which leads to the mental image of Spock looking at Kirk trying to drive, cocking the eyebrow, and saying "If you cannot find it, grind it."

As Spock would said on Spectre of the Gun ...... They are illusions, Shadows without substance, Unreal, Appearances only, Nothing but ghosts of reality, They are lies, false hoods, spectres without body, They are to be ignored.

I am looking forward to this movie more and more. who cares if it is not exactly true to the already established cannon. Every Trek series played with established cannon and changed what did not work for them.
