    WARNING: MORE SPOILER TALK

Yeah, I've heard the alternate timeline theory, too, even to the tune that we'll be seeing three different versions of the Enterprise over the course of the film as the timeline changes (much like the TNG ep you noted).

And, although interesting, I guess I'm just not getting the idea of devoting so much time to making it in-continuity just to undo the continuity so they can proceed with their stuff. Sure, if it was a middle season of a TV show they wanted to shake up, a great idea for introducing change in a dramatic way (kinda like what the did in the second season of "Primeval"). But rather than waste a lot of time trying to make things fit and explain away others, at this point, I still think a clean reboot would have been a beter idea. I'll know better come May . . .

Maybe they'll explain it all. But maybe just calling it a "Batman Begins" or Casino Royale"-style reboot would have been better, and freed them from discussion of "canon" to do whatever they thought was best for their new take.

From what I understand, what we're gonna see is the development of the classic crew as it took place in a parallel reality. This way the movie is not beholden to previously established TOS canon. And technically it's not a prequel or reboot.. more like a variation.

If you check out the TNG ep "Parallels":

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallels_(TNG_episode)

..I'd guess it's along those lines. Some of the infinite realities are very close to the universe we know, some are quite different. So what we're gonna see is some of the same, and some different.. which should make it pretty interesting.

We can never have the old cast back, but there is potential here for a good story and a good time. After seeing the new preview, I'm game.

Awesome Dave!! Open-Minded-ness is something Star Trek always preached to Us. The least we can do is give it a chance!

Trekmovie.com has posted a scene-by-scene breakdown of the trailer, with comments, some a bit spoilerish (so be warned):

I'm game, too. But I do want to address all the "let go of the past" criticisms of some of the people criticizing the changes:

First, I don't mind change. I remember being a little unsure of the flattened nacelles when the TMP Enterprise was first presented, but to be honest, it's the best ever. in my opinion, a nearly perfect re-design that made my favorite ship that much cooler. I liked the 1701-D, never could stand the E, but this new design . . . what they've shown of it (and maybe it'll be better on screen), it's not that it's different, it's that I don't like the design -- a matter of taste that has nothing to do with *that* it's different but *how* it's different.

I'm OK with the overall look of the new uniforms (though I don't like the Enterprise "arrowhead" screened as a repeating pattern over the shirt). And the recasting . . . well, we'll see.

I don't like that it's a time travel story -- Berman and Braga overdid that enough in their tenure -- but maybe it'll work, and help them make some point in the adventure.

I saw Quantum of Solace last week end but missed the Star Trek trailer, so I watched it on you-tube then on the star trek site. I have to say I'm super excited to see it. Granted I never really followed the original Trek that much, as I'm 26 so it was a little before my time.

I think the main reason they cast so young is...if J.J. does pull a Rabbit out of His Hat, and the Francise is restarted...the Actors won't get too old on them, to quick.

Which is why I think they didn't cast Matt Damon as Kirk(who was reportedly interested in the Role)...he is already to old for their plan! Which is a cryin' shame...because I thought Matt would have made a GREAT Kirk!
