Does anybody else think something fishy is going on here?
We have seen pictures of the crew and the ship in detail. The commercials are on tv, the preview is on everywhere.....The producers are showing 25-40 minute long previews to the press and seemingly, anyone who can figure out how to get to these showings. All of the story details have been leaked/confirmed and misinformation denied. They have pretty well let all the cats out of the bag and we are still 6 months away from the actual movie release?
This is weird, and not standard practise! Either there is some kind of huge twist to the story that hasnt been released.....or something else is going on?......or somebody forgot to tell the marketing department that the release was moved to May?!

    But, they wont
How about the 206 bones in Nimoy's body?

If you're representative of "old fans" it seems
them including (and paying) Nimoy was a
    useless gesture.

    One man's opinion:

I'm a huge Trek fan going back for decades, working conventions for the better part of a decade with Creation Entertainment. I love Classic Trek. Always have. It's why retroactive construction of the Trek timelines and history used to bug me now end. I can tell you honestly the whole "Kirk driving a car" thing is the tip of the iceberg. Trek has spent the last 35 years totally screwing up their timelines left and right:

Wrath of Khan - best Star Trek film ever? Yes, it is but it still contains one of the worst ret-cons to date - "I never forget a face Mr.... Chekov!" - Chekov doesn't come until the second season, "Space Seed" is a first season episode.

First Contact - I liked the flick, but the whole Zephram Cochrane timeline is turned on its ears, spun counterclockwise, and had Borgs added to boot. Most of what comes from "The Changeling" is ditched and ret-conned.

Nemesis - It still bugs me that I actually paid to see this film, but who could forget "Hey there's another Soong android!" What's it called? Uh... "B4?", and oh, yeah it's buried where only escaped Romulan slaves can find it, repair it, and reprogram it. Starfleet Research has decades of android research based on Data and couldn't construct one of their own, but fugitive Romulan Miners find one and (without instructions) fix it up and turn it into a double agent. Oh, the pain...

The Ferengi episode on "Enterprise" - I loved this series, but the entire Ferengi / Human contact history is chucked out the window. This is only an example - as it was the early years of Starfleet a lot of material was redacted, redrawn, or straight out retconned.

and on, and on, and on. I just learned to let it go. Otherwise, I will get no evolving Star Trek, and I really miss that. Nothing will ever dampen my enthusiam for Classic Trek. Hell, I even dig the animated series. I'm die hard TOS, baby! Bring on the miniskirts and go-go boots!

I saw the new Trek trailer at "Qauntum of Solace", and saw Krik driving a car, the shipyards on Earth, the new style of the "Classic Enterprise", the all white STTMP sets, and all new actors. And then I let it go, and decided to be in the seats when it premieres. Maybe it helps a bit that Zoe Saldana is very hot. I also like the attempt to at least keep the look of the classic uniforms, if the material construction is a bit different. There are things in it I think I'll like, and some things in there I think I won't. But it's all I'll get, so take it or leave it, I suppose.

Maybe it sucks eggs. Maybe it's alright. Maybe it's the most awesome film ever made. Regardless, it still ain't Classic Trek, and it never will be.

But then again, it doesn't have to be.

The alternate timeline thing is actually quite smart if they play it right. Classic Trek can go untainted for those who refuse to embrace this new series. The new movies can change what they want, but also redo storylines as they wish. If they want to make a movie out of Amok Time, they can. As I understand it, it's basically like Marvel's approach to the Ultimate titles. Nick Fury can be Samuel L. Jackson over there, but stay a caucasian in the main Marvel U.

even to the tune that we'll be seeing three different versions of the Enterprise over the course of the film as the timeline changes
That'll be confusing to me and I'm a fan.

Trek is sort of problematic in that you have a huge, obsessive fan bse. ANd since they're your cash crop you don't want to alienate them.... BUT you kinda DO, 'cos normal people don't have the same depth of interest they do, and have different tastes and concerns. So if you're looking at expanding your audience you're gonna hafta trick the Trekkies; make the sort of thing normal folks want to see more palatable to them. An in continuity reboot is one way.
It really is a tough call.

I remember doing a trek show after TNG premiered, it was in a high school gym and wasn't very big. The concensus of those people was "We hate the new show"

Two years later, the attendance had doubled, it was being held in a hotel and everyone was dressed like Picard. So in the end, it kept Star Trek alive. So could this movie, I may not love it but maybe it turns a bunch folks on to the franchise.

    >I've heard the alternate timeline theory, too,

Hmmmm.... that sort of thing seems really prevalent these days. Sort of the all purpose copout if the audience doesn't like your stuff.

So.... Kirk punches out reality and then Vulcans have pointy ears again....

    >even to the tune that we'll be seeing three different versions of the Enterprise over the course of the film as the timeline changes

One of the things the Japanese started doing with their sci-fi shows is giving the hero multiple forms. Lets you sell more toys. I'm HOPING we don't see that sort of thing happening here....

    >I'm just not gettign the deia of devoting so much time to making it in-continuity just to undo the continuity so they can proceed with their stuff.
