Interesting article on why this story didn't make the mainstream media like Superman's and Captain America's deaths did. Says a lot for the incoherent plotting and editorial mess DC is in these days:
    Newsarama.com : Batman R.I.P. - Finally?

Edited to add this: Jett's take on all this from Batman-On-Film: Right on brother.

    A BATMAN-ON-FILM.COM OP-ED - "BATMAN'S DEAD!?

It also shows that "writing for the trade paperback" isn't necessarily a good thing....

        >Long explanation short – there’s a wide open backdoor to Bruce Wayne’s “death” that Morrison is even hinting isn't final in the same issue where Batman “dies.”

....and when people are thirsty they drink something. And when people are tired, they sleep. And the sun will rise tomorrow....

So.... not only do we all realize that NOBODY really dies in a superhero comic, but now they're trying to play that up as a hook? Er....

Seriously guys, you might consider giving Shonen Jump a try. You'll get used to the eyes and reading backwards. Really.

With Morrison, this may be his way of pointing out the absurdity of "event" comics and death in super hero comics, within such a comic itself. Since Animal Man he has enjoyed playing with the 4th wall between the reader and the universe they read about. Having Batman's backdoor so obvious points out the inherent truth that no major character ever dies and stays dead. Even Barry Allen, even Bucky for pete's sake have returned of late.

That may be his whole angle on this, but I don't find his method entertaining at all, and that's what I read comics for. If it was more well done and coordinated, maybe. But not like this.

Yeah. It's kinda like making your point that violence is bad by beating people with a hammer. Or that some people are crooks by robbing someone. Or that electricity is bad by whizzing on an electric fence....

Seriously; everyone spends WAY too much time wallowing in the crapulence of the old, tired and shallow. Writers AND fans.

this whole story line from RIP to final Crisis has been one big confusing mess. The story line makes no sense. How did batman end up going up against Darseid when the last time we saw him he was blowing up with a helicopter. Morrison should retire and Didio should be fired.
by the way, I agree, that was not batman in the batsuit Clark was carrying at the end.

So to those unfortunate souls who parted with their money for FC #7, was there some "gotcha" moment about Batman's death? Did I hear right that he was back in time as a caveman with Anthro?

                    *Spoilers ahead!*

To be honest with you, I got the book (only becaused I'd ordered the series and won't stick my guy for them, or otherwise I'd have dropped it)...and I think that's what happened, but I really can't be sure as it was a garbled mess.

As for what's come out of this, well, I'm not sure of that either. Maybe Hawkman died & got a reboot? Looks like classic Aquaman was brought back to life somehow, just showed up in a panel no explanation...Kamandi's world was resurrected and so were the Kirby New Gods & Captain Carrot & Friends!

And it seems that now the entire universe knows there are Multiverse worlds, but what that means to the average joe I dunno. I personally know that Australia exists, doesn't mean I can get there anytime I want or that I ever will...the prospects do seem unlikely!

Of course, none of this was explained, it just sort of happened and then on to the next scene. And really, DC will just do whatever they want in the regular titles, regardless of how this played out, so it's relatively meaningless.
In fact, I'd say this is just forgotten within a year or so, if not completely contradicted within a matter of weeks by somebody along the line.

^ I haven't read it yet but it sounds like a f'ed up mess....par for the course with Grant Morrison in general and this book in particular. I'd be happy about the return of Aquaman if I didn't think they'd f' that up too some where down the road...

I haven't read read anyone this yet , but i have been getting the fine points from those who have . I have a few of the issues from the crossovers , but I dont get the story that i've been told . I also hear that DC is cold turkey stopping all the sub-bat titles , No more batgirl, Robin, or Nightwing issues. I have to wonder whats going on over there at DC . Its no wonder as much as I love the DC characters I never found their books more enjoyable than Marvel's.

^^ Didn't even know there still was a Batgirl title. Nightwing is being cancelled due to his promotion to head Bat.

agreed, the newer bat characters have all sucked....except maybe Batwoman, man is she hot....too bad she hits for the other side
Robin was cancelled because of whatever will happen with the battle for the cowl. My guess is it will be Dick as Batman and Tim will still be Robin....until next year when they do the big return of the bat storyline, that is sure to come.
this whole story line along with final crisis sucked. it was a confusing mess and grant morrison should be fired.

Agreed, but too many people think Morrison is the new Messiah of DC. Don't get why, none of what he's doing makes any sense to me. Back when he did Animal Man, that was all new and good, but somewhere along the line this guy has veered off into la-la land, yet he's still touted as being so wonderful.

Granted, his JLA revival started out great, then he got into this "big plan" stuff leading to a huge letdown as a finale. In that case everyone in the world got powers to help fight off the end of all that is. Now in this fiasco, after all the build-up and destruction, everything is fixed because Superman wished it to all be better. How lame.

Deux Ex Machina, Mr Morrison. DC even publishes a book by the same name.
