I hear you Livingdead70. It's a mental block to some degree I guess. Rock music is an image building business but makes no claim in suggesting any of it has to be true. If putting those four guys in the studio makes it real, so be it. But in truth that has seldom been the case. All that matters is whether you like the product. If you don't like Paul or Gene personally, then don't support them. I've met Gene twice; Paul and Ace once. All were great experiences but I don't think I'm qualified to say I know them. I like their product, but I try not to personalize it like I need to know if they give in the same offering plate I do. I guarantee you they don't have any qualms about their perspective. One thing is for sure... When that album comes out, it will be a REAL KISS record and it will sound like Ace and Peter are on it, just like it did in the 70's.

Thats the thing man, Kiss hasnt sounded like Kiss in 30 years. Dont even try and tell me Psycho Circus or 90% of the crap they spewed upon the planet was good.
This is gettin redundant !!! Its like argueing politics, we are going to have to agree to dissagree!!!!

Oh no problems here at all Livingdead70. We're just having a friendly banter about rock music. Yeah, Kiss has evolved through the years to follow industry trends, but unfortunately that is the business. What I've always thought interesting is how Kiss has tried to repeat the formula of Destroyer in different segments of their career. What most people don't realize is that Destroyer was a slow seller until a radio DJ flipped the single of Detroit Rock City over and started to play Beth. Had that not happened, we may not have been talking about that album with the kind of love you hear these days. The band even refused to talk to the producer Ezrin after it's initial slow sales. They resented him for the approach which was viewed as "radical" at the time. But in many ways Destroyer is a time piece. Ballads like Beth were rampant in the 70's so mainstream audiences flocked to this record when they heard that song and, for those reasons, the album went platinum.

Of course Kiss fans embrassed the album's intent which was to give each member a unique image (Ezrin was the producer for Alice Cooper). But ultimately it's success was truly anchored to that one song. You didn't see Kiss go back to that approach for the albums 'Rockn'Roll Over" or "Love Gun". But at different points in Kiss' career they've gone back to that approach to try and resurrect sales. They did it with "Revenge" (produced by Ezrin) which I thought was very Destroyer-like in song selection. And I think it was even more obvious with "Psycho Circus". Of course neither approached the artistry of Destroyer but it is interesting that they always return to that album for guidance when perhaps they should try to be less pop and more rock. Trey you and I certainly agree on this point.

I actually think Destroyer was not one of the better "70s" Kiss albums. I get alot of flak for this next statement, but I love Dynasty.
But you know Kiss was not an "album" band, Id call them more of a singles driven band being that on most of thier albums there are 3-4 good ones and then several "meh" ones.............................................

Not a singles band for me, I can easily name entire albums of theirs that I love from start to finish hehe But I agree with you somewhat on "Destroyer", I don't consider that to be one of my favorites. I too would much rather listen to "Dynasty". The entire side two of that record is excellent to my ears. Then again I also love "Music From The Elder", which most seem to despise. It might not be a true KISS record but it's good nonetheless.

I like Dynasty as well. But in the eyes of alot of fans, it was Kiss' first sell out record with regards to the disco hit, "I was made for Loving you". I personally didn't have a problem with it, but I will say that album steered them to make a more pop-oriented record like Unmasked because the single was so big. From the perspective of artistic freedom, I consider the first Kiss record through to the Elder to be the band at their most creative. After the Elder flopped they had to follow formula in creating Creatures, then got in line behind all of the other bands to survive the remainder of the 80's when the makeup came off. So from the first lp 'Kiss' until the 'Elder' that was Kiss doing what they wanted. After that it's been what they think the listening community will accept.

I am excited about this upcoming record though for several reasons: First, Paul is producing it which tells me he will give it the edgy treatment he gave his solo album; Second, Kiss no longer NEEDS a hit record for financial gain so my thinking is this album will go back to the days when Kiss did what they wanted; and third, I think the record will do well anyway because it is looking to be a Walmart exclusive which has been a marketing gimmick for many of the older 70's era bands (and those have done very well for the most part). A new Kiss record with new outfits, an oil painting cover, and a new found freedom to express themselves the way they use to... Sounds like a winning combination to me.

I am still trying to figure out why I post about KISS is in the Classic Toys area. I'd ask Brian to move it but.....nevermind.

                  Oh well.

Maybe this new album will help wash the stink of Family jewel's off Gene's nutsack.
