Just kidding... sitting at home after school on the shag carpet playing with my Mego batmobile while watching an episode of Star Trek. Then a commercial comes on advertising Planet of the Apes "by Mego."

Being young and innocent, and waiting all year long for summer to arrive. Roller skating on the sidewalk. Being able to run and not ache after. Eating two big Macs at one sitting. Sitting on top of the monkeybars and watching all the children play in the sand. Not worrying about sunscreen and staying in the shade. Swinging as high as I could go and then jumping off the swing and landing in the sand. Getting in a bathing suit and not feeling embarassed. Stuff I would not do now. Ouch.

          >You know what I miss the most? Those great corner variety stores.
You know. Those little mom-and-pop places that sold a little bit of everything.

Yeah! There was one right by the house, back in the day; and it's where I got most of my "Monster Scenes" kits when I was a kid. As well as all sorts of nicknacks, a set of monster puzzles that came in coffin shaped boxes, and then monster colouring books. (That I'm STILL trying to replace!)

'Course that brings me to what I REALLY miss from the 70's: my sense of discovery! I miss being surprised by books, movies, toys.... I suspect for the most part it's me; being older I've seen so much that it all kinda looks alike. But for a while I thought there was a neverending variety of figures, Megos and Aurora kits.

The 70s were without a doubt cool. You can never replace your childhood no matter how hard you try. But even with the recession things are pretty good today.

As much as I loved all my toys, cartoons, movies, TV shows and comics from back in the day, all of it is better today — albeit more expensive — than yesteryear except for the music.

I do miss the wonder of childhood. But, honestly I wouldn't want to go through it again.

As Styx sang "these are the best of times." Even with the recession.

Freedom, really. Your mom would kick you out of the house around noon and tell you to be home by supper. No coddling, no "helicopter parenting." The rest of the day was up to you.

I think the 24 hour news cycle ruined that. Once parents heard about abductions and molestations every minute of the day no one wants to lose track of their kids and end up on the news. I'm not saying it was "safer" then I suspect it was about as dangerous, just it wasn't leading the news so the fear level was lower. I remember when Adam walsh disappeared it put a whole new focus on abducted kids.

I think it's generally safer here in the USA today compared to what it was in the 70's ...

Because of the constant news you hear about more incidents, but I think there's less of them and they're generally more scaled down.

Not for this parent. My son is now 21, and my daughter is now 18.
When they were younger, I raised them the way I was raised.
I taught them right from wrong, how to take care of themselves and how to be responsible.
I fought tooth an nail with my wife over it, as she was the over-protective one. But my kids were walking to the park by themselves by like 7 or 8.
Going several blocks down to the local corner store on their own by 9 or 10.
They spent summer nights running around playing tag with thier friends, and spent many a summer / fall day down the street playing baseball or football in the vacant field with all the other neighborhood kids..
It taught them the needed social skills, how to be independant, and that even though I might not be around watching their every move, that I always found out when they did something wrong :D

I hear you there...remember what it was like to go to a comic spinner rack or up the aisle of a new department store and see a book or toy you'd never heard of or seen before?
Now with the internet, etc. we know within five minutes of an announcement what the thing will have in it, photos of it, prototypes, release dates, the sculptor's mother's maiden name , on-& on. There's no sense of surprise for anything. We see trailers, clips, photos, behind the scenes views, etc. weeks & months, even years in some cases for every movie or TV series we want to see. Nothing like when Star Wars came out and we all went and were blown away by the special effects.
Also, with Ebay, and Craigslist etc. nothing is hard to find anymore either. No comic shops either- nearest one to me was 50 miles away. If you wanted back issues, you had to HUNT for them, or jusyt be lucky enough to come across them at a second hand book store or flea market. I remember when I collected comics in the '70s I'd find an old 1960s Justice League or Spider-Man comic- those were rare and we'd never seen them! Silver Age Marvels were things we'd heard about, Holy Grails that when we would come across a stack of them at a yard sale we would feel like we'd struck gold in the Klondike! Then they were only like 10 years old or so- now 30 years later you can buy practically any title you wanted in your choice of condition, it's a matter of how much you want to spend.

Best part of the 70's ? Hmmm.......Well I only Had '77,'78,'79. Having been born in '77 I don't remember them. LOL. I was a child of the 80's and well, sadly caught the end of mego , and their left overs on pegs in Toys R Us, and Child World. Obviously Mego's to me are the best part of the 70's. Now The 80's Please don't get me started on the Good, The Bad, and the Damn Near Ugly.
