I really want to address the comments I am hearing lately, as I am directly responsible for much of it. I want to explain my position, to give a clearer understanding.
Eight years ago when Scott asked me to take over in his absence, I gathered this might be thankless but I had a lot of respect for what he had created, I wanted to keep it going. I was sucky at html, photoshop and even worse as a moderator but it grew despite me. The main reason for this was, in my opinion, selflessness of the members here.
Mego Content- I’ve heard this a lot about this lately, yet I must bring a new Mego item up twice a week. Where else does that happen? I unveiled more prototypes than I ever have in the last sixty days, yet I heard some were “disappointed” by this. Spend a weekend building a gallery and receive that comment.
Dave’s accessory check is a freaking monumental task, I know because if it were up to me, it would never, ever get done.
Moreover, some that are crying loudest about Mego content being down are the ones who don’t lift a finger to do anything, even when I’ve asked for their input.
If you’re thinking the Museum is turning into a 70’s pop culture site, well I have news, it always was a 70’s pop culture site. How can a site devoted to such iconic characters be anything else?
I started plaid stallions as a sister site to the museum, to store “the other 70’s stuff” and I’m proud of it. If people view it as “ruining the museum” then I apologize, it was not the intention. It's brought new folks to our community.
Cards- Again, I take the blame. An idea that was brought to life largely by Scott’s talent and devotion. Scott puts domestic bliss on the line to create these and the intention was to bring more folks here. Sure, it’s brought some card collectors into the mix but we have to accept that. Again, I hear a critic saying they are ruining the Museum and suggestions of who is worthy to be here, that’s not the Museum I know.
Mego is long gone, we wanted to create a collectible that celebrated the company, we never sought to make a profit but to create a way for collectors to trade and interact. They’re based on what I think made the Museum a success in the first place, selflessness, I see it everyday and it makes me happy.
Non Mego Forums- I read comics, I watch TV and I buy JLU figures. What is wrong with discussing it here? I don’t see many people surfing in here to solely discuss these topics otherwise they’d be very bored. These forums were designed for Mego collectors to “linger longer” and they work.
What me, Scott, Joe and Dave do here, we do out of enjoyment of the hobby and honestly, we expect nothing out of it except hopefully shared enjoyment. I’ve seen Joe’s expenses and contrary to rumour, he ain’t covering them with the raffle, I doubt he’d have enough to pay for a coffee when all is said and done.
I myself, have a business that if I spent the hours I spent working on the site, I’d be buying top dollar Kresges monthly.
Since I started eight years ago, I’ve made friends and had many positive experiences that I’ll never forget. It's 98% positive, don't get me wrong, it's what keeps me here.
I’ve also received two separate threats of bodily harm, been slandered, called an elitist for making friends, accused of harboring a clique which includes people I barely know. When people hawk their products here and are met with some objection, they badmouth the site but still continue to market here. We take away politics, we’re jerks, we allow politics, we’re jerks and so on and so forth.
It can be monumentally thankless but I’m not looking for support or sympathy here, I knew the score eight years ago. I am not going anywhere. I've just been quiet lately due to these things and I need to explain how I feel.
If you are bothered by something on the forum, let us know, give us suggestions on how you'd improve it, we're happy to hear it, please don't just complain and expect it to work.
