Mego Content in the Mego Forums

I really want to address the comments I am hearing lately, as I am directly responsible for much of it. I want to explain my position, to give a clearer understanding.

Eight years ago when Scott asked me to take over in his absence, I gathered this might be thankless but I had a lot of respect for what he had created, I wanted to keep it going. I was sucky at html, photoshop and even worse as a moderator but it grew despite me. The main reason for this was, in my opinion, selflessness of the members here.

Mego Content- I’ve heard this a lot about this lately, yet I must bring a new Mego item up twice a week. Where else does that happen? I unveiled more prototypes than I ever have in the last sixty days, yet I heard some were “disappointed” by this. Spend a weekend building a gallery and receive that comment.

Dave’s accessory check is a freaking monumental task, I know because if it were up to me, it would never, ever get done.

Moreover, some that are crying loudest about Mego content being down are the ones who don’t lift a finger to do anything, even when I’ve asked for their input.

If you’re thinking the Museum is turning into a 70’s pop culture site, well I have news, it always was a 70’s pop culture site. How can a site devoted to such iconic characters be anything else?

I started plaid stallions as a sister site to the museum, to store “the other 70’s stuff” and I’m proud of it. If people view it as “ruining the museum” then I apologize, it was not the intention. It's brought new folks to our community.

Cards- Again, I take the blame. An idea that was brought to life largely by Scott’s talent and devotion. Scott puts domestic bliss on the line to create these and the intention was to bring more folks here. Sure, it’s brought some card collectors into the mix but we have to accept that. Again, I hear a critic saying they are ruining the Museum and suggestions of who is worthy to be here, that’s not the Museum I know.

Mego is long gone, we wanted to create a collectible that celebrated the company, we never sought to make a profit but to create a way for collectors to trade and interact. They’re based on what I think made the Museum a success in the first place, selflessness, I see it everyday and it makes me happy.

Non Mego Forums- I read comics, I watch TV and I buy JLU figures. What is wrong with discussing it here? I don’t see many people surfing in here to solely discuss these topics otherwise they’d be very bored. These forums were designed for Mego collectors to “linger longer” and they work.

What me, Scott, Joe and Dave do here, we do out of enjoyment of the hobby and honestly, we expect nothing out of it except hopefully shared enjoyment. I’ve seen Joe’s expenses and contrary to rumour, he ain’t covering them with the raffle, I doubt he’d have enough to pay for a coffee when all is said and done.

I myself, have a business that if I spent the hours I spent working on the site, I’d be buying top dollar Kresges monthly.

Since I started eight years ago, I’ve made friends and had many positive experiences that I’ll never forget. It's 98% positive, don't get me wrong, it's what keeps me here.

I’ve also received two separate threats of bodily harm, been slandered, called an elitist for making friends, accused of harboring a clique which includes people I barely know. When people hawk their products here and are met with some objection, they badmouth the site but still continue to market here. We take away politics, we’re jerks, we allow politics, we’re jerks and so on and so forth.

It can be monumentally thankless but I’m not looking for support or sympathy here, I knew the score eight years ago. I am not going anywhere. I've just been quiet lately due to these things and I need to explain how I feel.

If you are bothered by something on the forum, let us know, give us suggestions on how you'd improve it, we're happy to hear it, please don't just complain and expect it to work.

    Brian,

Just want to say ya'll do a great job on this site, and I appreciate everything thats done.

Yeah its not the same mego museum I joined a few years back, but I take that as a good sign. It show the museum is growing and expanding.

    Thanks again for everything.

Think B.A. Where did you hide the Megos?

I just posted about this in the other thread in auction watch. Maybe some of that discussion could be moved to here as it is no longer about auctions.

I have typed it before and I will type it again. I personally like the Mego Museum as I find it very informative. There is no other place on the net "that I know of" that is this good of a place to meet and talk about Mego with other collectors. You definitely cannot ever please everyone as I have learned this long ago myself. I for one can understand your frustration. Most people do not realize what kind of work goes on behind the scenes. I think you guys behind the Museum are all doing a great job. Please keep up the great work.
Enjoy what you like, and let others enjoy what they like. (C) Azrak 2009

This isn't a plea for attention. If all this thread gets is a bunch of (gratefully received) kudos for a thankless job well done it will be a disappointment, IMO.

If you are someone who feels we don't focus on Mego enough around here please review Mego Blog posts to Mego Buzz and consider the number of interviews, prototype discoveries, ads and catalogs that offer clues to the puzzle of Mego history.

Ask yourself whether you commented in these threads (and I'm not asking for the pat on the back comment), whether you thought to ask a relevant question or lend your own perspective. If you want more Mego focus, you can't blame us for not trying. You have to give back. I look at these threads and I don't see the interested posts from a lot of the veterans I'd expect to hear from. If you look at the forums and see too much talk about cards and TV shows in your opinion, then support Mego content.

Start a thread, debate a point, share your passion. Lots of newbies here that need to hear the gospel.

I also understand why there isn't the energy there used to be. Some people have been coming here for almost a decade. They don't have that much to say about Mego anymore or they aren't the passionate collectors they were when it was new and there were so many questions. It's weird, between the interviews and discoveries here and all the research in Ben's book, a lot of the questions we used to go in circles around have been answered in one way or another....to comparatively little fanfare. I blame that on the passage of time and the fickle interests of human beings. Not everyone can think as much about Megos as some of us that generate Mego content do.

This is my favorite site. I do not personally know the good folks that run it. I stumbled upon this site as a mego collector and have nothing but good things to say about it. I will say that if anyone is criticizing the gentleman who goes by "Palitoy" on this site, then they are misguided. This good man (along with the other administrators) gives his time and energy for the good of all of us.

I think I was on the site for about a week last year, when I expressed interest in receiving some mego museum cards. In LESS THAN A WEEK I received a starter pack in the mail from PALITOY. For free! And I am a complete stranger to him.

Please, people, let's keep this in perspective. It's supposed to be FOR FUN.

what the hell? who would say such a thing? I love this site and not just for all the great info you get out of it but all the cool people you meet and the new stuff you keep learning.

Same with Plaid stallions, that's awesome and I love looking back at the 70's stuff that I missed as a kid.

I have my little own site and it's a pain to keep updating and stuff like that,so I can only imagine the hard work and dedication you guys put into this place, honestly I don't think i'd be able to do it and I bet 97% of folks here could'nt do it either.

I know you guys are looking for suggestions to make this place better, but in my opinion it really doesn't get better then this.

Yeah you get your pain in the butt member once in a while, but that's all part of the fun.

I don't know why people complain. It's not like Mego content ever gets axed in favor of something else. There's always room for Mego content. But it's a short, finite supply. I like that the museum is alive and well with so many other things. Otherwise it would just be a bookmark to be checked periodically.....an old guide on the shelf for reference. Like it or not, it's all the other stuff that keeps this place alive.

I already know my Mego. My collection is more or less what I want it to be. I've read Ben's book. If that was all there was, I'd be on to something else. Thankfully, there's EMCE and Dida displays, and customizers galore......comic books, movies..... If you had a chance to go to two stores when you were a kid, would you pick the one that only sold Megos, or the one that sold Megos *and* just about everything else?

                  Plaid Stallions?
                  Plaid Stallions?
Who would even THINK Plaid Stallions is “ruining the museum” .
Stallions is my second favourite site on the net !!!!!
                  “Ruining the Museum” ?
If I ever heard anyone say that, I would not even dignify that comment with a reply.

I came for the Megos, but stayed for the pie.

That which does not grow stagnates. That which stagnates dies because growth is life, and life is change. Frankly the Museum isn't the same place it was 5-10 years ago - it's vastly improved. Expanded content and forums, the Marketplace, MegoMeet, Mego Museum cards, exclusive interviews, exclusive prototypes, Ben's WGT forum - you name it - if it's Mego, it's here. There's more Mego here than there has ever been before, and it contains more information about Megos that anywhere else in the Universe. It's the only place I hang out on the Web. Sure there are places that don't interest me, but then it isn't all about me, it's about the Mego Community.

It's at times like this I realize that I too often take this place for granted. I should be doing more to help the Community whose sandbox everyone so kindly lets me play in on a daily basis. I think I'll get off my duff tonight and get something done about that.

By the way - I dig Plaid Stallions - it's not only reminiscent of my childhood, but a wonderful slice of jumpsuited, polyester Americana.

You may be right Steve, the other stuff keeps this place not only alive but thriving.

This is a great site, and nobody works harder than Brian Heiler. Brian and Scott and Dave deserve a ton of credit. The cards are incredibly awesome, the accessory check is a monumental achievement that is not recognized enough, and all of the interviews are wonderful. Some of the discoveries have been mind-blowing.

If you are relatively new here, don't let the reminiscing of a few of us old-timers distract you from enjoying this great site. It's utterly fantastic, just quite different. It is human nature to yearn for good times past, sometimes at the expense of enjoying the present. It is human nature.

I do think these forums changed a little when the old forum was replaced. There was always a lot of probing questions going on there that just don't seem to happen anymore (especially in `Megofact`). An old thread got started again after lying dormant for a few months as new blood came searching, but those threads died with the old forum and as the majority had read them and put the knowledge to memory the questions aren't getting rejuvenated on the new forums. Just think how many times the old `What footwear does Hutch wear` type thread kept coming back. Maybe these type of threads just don't generate interest among the older members now as it seems like a repeat of times past.

I like the forums now, especially all different sections. It keeps it clearer. I don't have interest in all the sub sections so find it much easier to avoid what doesn't float my boat.

I think it is easy to become complacent with what the Museum represents and as we digest and learn from the information presented and the questions become less frequent and the enthusiasm wains. I'm still excited to learn new stuff, I'm just probably not as vocal about it.

I'm off to start a probing new thread now- I'll think i'll start with...."What footwear can Hutch be found with?"
"I should say I`m very much cleverer than any of the people who put me here. As a matter of fact, I could leave any time I wanted. It`s only a doll`s house after all. Anyway, I don`t mind. I like dolls" - The Mad Hatter, Arkham Asylum.

Content is King. I am always in awe of the amount of updates that happen on a subject that is 30 to 40 years old, about a company that has been out of business since the early 80's.

                              ps - thanks
