Thirty year old MOC megos make me sad. I'm glad that there are still
some out there, but it saddens me that no one wanted to pop off that
bubble and play with that toy.

MIB is great - I love to stare at the packaging while knowing I can free
the toy inside whenever the mood moves me.

The hobby has to grow and change or we will be the old men at the
train shows - setting up our displays to smaller and smaller crowds.

Yeah, that's really the same reason I go for MIB over MOC. I like having the original packaging, but I like being able to touch my toys if I feel like it.

Yeah, to be totally honest, MOC collecting or forever sealing toys in those graded lucite things is something I've never been able to totally wrap mind around. It's like collecting all of your favorite movies on DVD and then leaving them in the shrink wrap and never watching them or buying albums to never listen to them or video games and never playing them. It would drive me crazy.

I loves all kinds of vintage toys. But I don't have a lot of interest in owning toys I can never touch. But, you know, it's all the differences in our interests and collecting tastes that make the hobby cool. So, it's all good.

        Sad, but true.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

I feel you WEREWOLF.. but like me I never have had a mego ahi etc figures on card so too me having loose ones makes me just want to get one and see and feel in my own to hands playing with them and able to position them is one thing but having a brand new one on card feels like your holding a piece of history and not being able to get another one well that's how I think it would feel but yeah just hoping one of these days I can get a hold of a mego or ahi carded figure that I really want. crowds my get small but the people that do still come around would appriate them as much as you do and in my opioion is better then having a big crowd with like half saying what's so great about a carded batman doll from the 70s. just me tho.

My opinion on why things are the way are is that it IS (as already said)
that things have run their course w/vintage Mego stuff.... it'll never
            be 1995 again.

Most specifically, I'd say THE HUNTS ARE MUCH FEWER now that
            things have run their course.

If there were more hidden finds to be found, then things would have hope
for being cheaper here and there... now the hunt is more "locked in"
as far as price.... and that's regardless of if the overall prices are down:
That $30 MOC Iron Man is going to be a lot harder to find in 2012.

I never WANTED packaged/carded toys... but I understand the mentality
just fine.... and the package/card collector will ALWAYS have a place in the
collector community... for the exact converse reason that loose collectors
have their place.... its a vibe of comfort for display... and altho' one may
remain stronger the other, one OR the other will never mysteriously disappear.

I'm still around, but not actively collecting for at least the last 12 months. I have bought the odd piece of vintage carded Star Wars though. My Mego collection got to the point where I only needed about 3 or 4 (loose) of the standard WGSH range to finish it, and guess what? They were the expensive ones, which I can't really justify spending money on at the moment. I still check in most days. I check the main Mego sections (Buzz, Auction watch and Fact), but don't often feel the need to add anything. The site is so comprehensive now that more often than not, an answer can be found by having a look around. It used to feel like I knew a lot of the regulars by there first name too, but not been as active as I used to, that connection feels more distant now.

I'm new here and I have been collecting off and on since the early 90's. For Mego, I collect MOC and because of my picky standards it has been hard to align what I want along with availablity as well as having the funds on hand. It has always been about the chase rather than dying with the most toys so there have been pieces that I have sold along the way.

What started me on this? Along with the Megos I had with a kid was the sad disappointment of Santa not getting me the Star Trek Enterprise and figures when I was little. I righted that historical wrong about 17 years later.

Anyway, I collect what I like, try to get good pieces and know that these things take time.

I'm a vintage guy, as well as customs and retros. I don't do packaged, only loose. I definitely have begun running out of anything new to buy, with only a few tgings I really want, most notably a Jokermobile.

I finally picked up a boxed Supergirl to complete my boxed set. I have both vintage and new AND I have both pakcaged and loose.

I do think many collectors have moved on from BOTH loose and packaged figures. I think many of us who had disposable cash in our 30's have come across other responsibilities or interests. I'm still collecting despite those factors, but I do think it has lowered demand.

This conversation about the activity of vintage collectors got me wondering about something else.

Curious- how many others here are like me? I collect most everything mego-related. I have a lot of MIB/MOC stuff, I've finished most loose 8" lines, I have vintage playsets, AND I dabble in many of the retro lines.

I hear a lot about preferences for pakcaged vs loose or vinatge vs retro. They all give me some sort of Mego happiness I really do enjoy collecting 'em all. And I mean ALL. No judgment. Mine isn't the right way. It's just mine.

Something like that for me. My main vintage loves are Mego (mostly WGSH & Star Trek) and vintage Star Wars. I actually have more disposable income now than I ever did but prices are much higher now even if they've come down from previous highs. So I buy a few times a year just focus on other hobbies/interests the rest of the time.

Remodeling my basement gave me the shocker of my life when I discovered the actual volume of my collection and how long it took me to move it. So I have calmed down drastically. In remodeling, I'm also at a stage where some of my newer age toys will likely be sold off in favor of space which I will still desire. I want to display more than I store. And right now, I'm having to store more, so that doesn't sit well with me. I even turned down a MIB Mego Robin at Wonderfest for $120.00. I already had one and just couldn't bring myself to store another one. H*ll of a price though. I lowered my head though when i found out he ended up selling it for $80.00.

That really is the vibe I'm getting at the two big toy shows that I have tried to attend for the past dozen years or so. The train guys and dinky car guys and 12" vintage Joe guys are literally dying off and you can shoot a cannon through the aisles.

Meanwhile, at all the newer toy shows popping up that brand themselves as 80's shows, the rooms are complete packed and claustrophobic with MotU, GI Joe RAH, star wars, thunder cats, transformers fans that are drowning in new product. Although I was pleasantly surprised by the vintage haul today f seventies era stuff.
