I believe the re-mego movement has hurt the vintage mego collecting because everybody is jumping on board on that cause its cheap then buying vintage megos witch have come down in price but are still high and Im talking boxed or carded not loose

but for me personally what brought me to the Forum was not Megos to begin with I dont own one Mego. It was Vintage 70's 80's toys collecting but I will always buy vintage over the new stuff, but since now Im unemployed I really dont buy anything anymore

Not sure i agree with this...with ebay crashing and burning more and more everyday i think it could become tougher to find so much vintage stuff available at any given time.

Also, the collector window for vintage toys plays a huge factor i think....if your under 30,chances are you really don't care too much about megos and if you do...it would be a handful of the "main" characters anyway....

I personally DO only collect "Vintage" toys but it's pretty much just 1980's Transformers...stuff from when I was a kid...I don't have too much interest in older toys with the exception of superhero stuff only because the characters are timeless...and not attached to any specific "era" and i like the "look" of vintage superhero toys....

but stuff like POTA or SMDM were way before my time,so i have zero interest in them...I would imagine alot of my generation feels the same way...so will the market fall out on pieces attached to a certain "era" ? I believe it will without question and so the people collecting it will just grow smaller and smaller as the years pass.

Just about every vintage Mego that I really wanted, I got here over the course of 3-4 years. I was only unfaithful to the Museum once, buying a Frankenstein on Ebay...
And that's only because nobody wanted to sell me one here...sob...

I'm just missing two Megos that I still really want, but I can wait.
Oh, last year, I spotted a set of three carded WGSH here on Ebay Belgium (Torch, Spidey and Hulk), I had no money, so I put in the minimum bid of $40. And won. Yeah, that was great.
        Man, that's twice I cheated...
And there was that time with the Russian hooker called Svetlana...ahum, that's something different...skip that...

Oh, yes, I bought two CIPSA Apes here as well during the last year.
The guy selling them was wearing shades and a long raincoat. He said "hey, mister, wanna see a monkey with no pants?"

It took a while to persuade me...

I collect a variety of 60's and 70's toys. I just got back into collecting Megos at the beginning of the year, and am still working on my collection. I have gotten some good deals here, and on ebay. I am in no hurry, due to lack of funds :( But I will still continue with it. I don't collect much new stuff, but I have picked up a couple of retro action figures that Mego didn't make. But my vintage Mego search will continue for some time

Nostalgia works on a roughly 20 year cycle.... compensating for the economy and stuff like that. So the heyday of Mego nostalgia has passed.... which is why you don’t see any real big waves of new collectors coming in. You might, in 20 years when the time is right for ReMego nostalgia. For everyone else, they’re probably pretty close to completing their collections: there’s only a finite number of figures in each set after all. That’s why prices on all but a few genuinely rare pieces has stabilized or dipped.

I agree with you Don. Personally, I love all my vintage collection and all the new items coming out are great and help keep me interested.

I don't know if I can say I'm a "vintage" collector or not because I don't have THAT many MEGOs in my collection, but all of them that I do have are original equipment MEGOs so I guess that does qualify me as a "vintage" guy. It also tells me how old I am! ::laffs::

It's likely I would hunt down and buy more vintage MEGO stuff if I were financially capable of doing so, but right now, my cash supply is in something of a stranglehold, so I'm having to use cash for things like electricity, water and food. Pesky modern day conveniences are 'spensive!!!!
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

So...I think the consensus among people who have posted on this thread is that we're mostly all still interested in collecting vintage stuff, but we're not in a hurry. Peoples' financial situations may have changed and they may be less willing to shell out for high-end stuff unless there's a bargain to be had.

If we're a fair representation of the vintage Mego market, and we're all waiting for a bargain to come along before we buy, then that kind of means that prices are too high - the demand just isn't there like it used to be (benbarb buyers notwithstanding). I see this as similar to the housing market: if the right buyer comes along, maybe you get your asking price. If you just want to sell right now, be prepared to drop the price.

everyone has their own preferences and everyone hsa their own financial limitations....but i think there are still plenty of vintage collectors around. i tend to stick to the lines i grew up with and had as a kid......Mego WGSH, TRek and Apes. GI Joe AT and Super Joe.....but as a natural progression i did move into Cpt. Action.....kind of a cross between GI Joe and Mego. I preer vintage but am not above buying modern if it is really cool

I collect vintage Mego & a few other lines. I even try to use vintage for my custom fodder. I'm a stickler for the condition of the toy, but pretty indifferent to the packaging.
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

I still collect vintage figures and toys, just not as much as I have in the past. The love comes and goes for me depending on what else is happening with life, but I'm still here pretty often. I only have the Trek Crew (MOC), but that doesn't keep me from hunting, watching out for elusive parts I need, or other vintage stuff I want. I'm into customs, because they're fun to make, and I like talking with the other customizers.

I'm one of those quiet collectors who only collects vintage. I check the forums to see what vintage talk is going on, but don't start threads. Maybe I should to get vintage talk going. I too love the thrill of the hunt, especially for the super insanely rare and obscure items. I think real hardcore vintage collectors are a dying breed, and I just turned 40! That's sad. Perhaps there could be a Mego Talk category for Only Vintage. Just typing that really makes me feel like an old man!

I'm certainly a vintage collector, and not into customs for my own collection, but it's also the ERA of the Mego that I celebrate. Some of my favorite pieces aren't Megos at all, but 70's inspired, like my new Disco-riffic Bowen Dazzler statue.
As long as it's got that 70's aesthetic, it's in.
