I find it odd as well, but neither of us are Americans, and the US traditionally has always being a bit skittish about sex and more readily willing to embrace violent imagery in cinema and TV (we were telling folks this weekend about Toronto's Baby Blue Movies and Steamy Windshields, as well as the Italian movies we all grew up with. Not to mention French language tv, where breasts are no big deal).
I would have no problem with a kid seeing this sex scene... there is no nudity and is extremely mild by even TV standards these days. It even shows the love between the two characters if that is a requisite (the other implied sex scene w/out love is never shown... it would be interesting to know if it was shot and cut out for pacing/timing). On the other hand, I honestly would not want to expose any six year old kid I know to the people being so violently and graphically torn apart, burned alive, cut open, etc. Not to mention the "zombie" scene, and even the fight between two "monsters" at the end has a rapey vibe to it.
