I'm in. So far I like what I've seen.

Unless you crafted the CGI effects yourself, how could you possibly have personalized my comparison?
Not sure if you're referring to the adult picture that you posted, or the adult picture that I posted?
If yours, maybe it's because that photo is not a close up and isn't exactly a sharp image that the general shape seems the same to you? If mine (which, incidentally, does have more life "etched" into it than the younger one does), do you really think this adult ape looks like the CGI attempt?
For clarity, I'm comparing what looks real/lifelike, I'm not comparing the structural shape.

...and whether you hate them on CGI/motion-capture...but to me...this was a very powerful scene...
Yahoo! Movies: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
Like I've said before...let's not compare it to the classic...let's see this as a stand alone film on its own right.
I think we are all in agreement here that nothing will ever best or replace the originals...but it sure looks like it's going to be a LOT better than Tim Burton's lame remake...
I am with you in excitement for this film - it does look good (if I can get past Franco stinking up the screen)
but to say "let's not compare this to the classic" doesn't fly because that is the very reason it is being made. that is why you know of the apes. it is generated more from the films than the original book. I don't know how many here have even read that - let alone in french as it was written. the original films are the measuring stick - like it or not.Comment

Not entirely true... While PLANET was Taylor's story, and BENEATH was Brent's, starting with ESCAPE the apes became the "leads" with their POVs being the focus of the films... ESCAPE was Cornelius and Zira's film, CONQUEST was definitely Caesar's film and Caesar was also the main ("lead") protagonist in BATTLE...
Add to that the credits list McDowall with top-billing so he's the leading actor (playing the different lead apes)...

I'm with you, I liked "KK '05" a lot... But I will say the first hour maybe could have been trimmed down some, and the entire film would have been made even better had they NOT had Jack Black in it... His "comedic" roles are bad enough but to see him trying to make his way thru a "dramatic" role was horrible...
Hector, I'm not Sandy, but you mentioned PJ's KONG and that's a subject that's near and dear to my heart. I know a lot of folks disliked his take on Kong, but I loved it and I thought a lot of that had to do with Andy Serkis' motion capture performance as the great ape. That said, I look forward to seeing his take on Caesar. I think he's gonna make a lot of people sit up and take notice...Comment

A few points...
I don't know how many threads ago it was, but I was on board with this sucker very early. That said...
Sandy is right when he mentions a plausibility factor in the Cesar attack. Too many people know the story of the Connecticut woman mauled by the domesticated chimp. So even though I want to give them the benefit because the scene has a time-forced edit, the dude should have been a puddle of goo. Very stupid on Fox's part to leave that scene intact during production.
As for Cesar's look - he's genetically altered, that's why he doesn't look totally chimp. The splicing rebuilds his brain tissue, giving him a human forehead because it physically expands his intelligence. You can see it in comparison to the other chimp designs which are far more ape.
If you have a smart phone, download the app and watch the Youtube channel for Rise. It's awesome viral material.
Here's the You tube channel with the viral clips, two or three new spots and the SDCC reel...

POTA fans - take a look at the architecture of the apes housing in the clip called "The Awakening" and the latest one, "We will integrate him"
The SDCC reel is awesome. The look Ceasr/Serkis gives at the end is fantastic. He's like Ahnuld circa Conan. No words, because he's thinking his next move.
I just noticed in The Awakening, they're doing a riff on Ursus rally from Beneath. The apes are answering in unison.Last edited by hedrap; Jul 23, '11, 7:23 PM.Comment

Here is the one major thing I have against this re-boot and I have to compare to the original. The big thing working against Rise... is the whole plot is spelled out before us. The purpose of this film is to watch he Apes rebel. There's no suspense in that. In the Original Planet of the Apes the story began at a point where we were not told all the info from the beginning. We had to guess and pay attention and even by the end we were left with more questions. Most of the Apes films were 1 man, (or apes or 2 apes), against the world, against fate, against all odds. This film is the slow build-up to an ape riot.
I don't think this film will have as many layers and certainly won't have the excellent writing Rod Serling gave to the original version. I don't think it will bomb but I don't think it will capture the imagination of the audience.Last edited by johnmiic; Jul 23, '11, 11:31 PM.Comment
