Not comparing it to the originals or anything, but to me it just looks phony and dumb. There's some genuine emotion on the face in the really tight shots, but anything medium or wide looks fake and silly. Sorry gang...

    Doesn't play silly to me.

At least not any more silly than a guy who dresses as a bat and fights crime.

Or vehicles that transform into giant robots.

Or believing that a man can fly.

I think it's all a matter of how much you are willing to suspend your sense of disbelief. If the story is good and the effects are even competently eye-fooling, I'm willing to go the extra mile and suspend mine a little more than usual....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

But will Rise of the apes be enough to fully reboot the POTA? I think this will do so so but not well enough for a sequel.

The "male" ape makeup was fantastic (the female ape ones were awful, too human and cutesy)...and I really liked Tim Roth's performance...he clearly stole the show.

The Lincoln memorial ending was pretty good.

But the rest was awful...starting with blanked staring zero personality Mark Wahlberg...the females apes looked too human...Paul Giamatti's comedic orangutan persona didn't fit with the rest of the lame story (radically changed in a bad way)... and the back and forth shots of the female chimp and the human female...showing jealousy towards each other fighting over the affection of Marky Mark...was downright comical, creepy, and embarrassing.
Wahlberg changing and influencing the entire ape world overnight was simply beyond laughable.
the female chimps in that movie were made more human so there would be sexual tension with Marky mark......ewwwww
i think the new movie looks really cool and can't wait to see it. it will stnad or fail on it's own but I agree with Hec it will make money and I also think there will be at least 1 sequel

As I've said before, I think you could have put any other name on this movie, and it would work, b/c it doesn't have the POTA feel. Having said that, however, I did like that trailer. Not b/c it's POTA, but b/c in and of itself, it did look interesting. As did Project X, or Harry & The Hendersons, or any other film that would make you feel for the animal/creature lead character. I probably will go see this; not b/c it's called POTA, but b/c it really looks like a good movie.

              Real chimpanzee:

              CGI chimpanzee:

I've seen the full-length trailer in the theater a few times, and the general reaction from each crowd was the same: laughter & negative comments. I will be surprised if this movie is able to recoup it's budget, especially via U.S. receipts alone.

I hope I'm wrong, I love the original franchise and would like to see a renewed interest. I just don't see this effort as a strong spring board for that purpose, and suspect it will dampen future attempts.

If you are going to post pictures of real chimpanzees...at least post an adult...and not a baby...lol...

BTW...I didn't hear any laughter from movie audiences.

...and as much as we love the classic POTA...come on...seriously...Jane Goodall could tell the differences...

I think the movie will do OK, but with all of the other movies out there right now I think attention to it will be diluted.
                    It's all good!

I posted the young ape, because it has less life "etched" into it than the adults, giving the CGI effort a fighting chance. The senior you posted only favors my point, as would a full-grown (but younger) adult.

And honestly, you're not really contrasting the 60's version are you? Nobody is silly enough to state that they replicated nature with the original makeup (unlike the claims I keep hearing about this film).

Does this work better for you:

No it doesn't it....perhaps in Dark Shadow world...but not mine...lol.

The adult looks more like the CGI chimp than the youngster.

Yeah...you posted the young chimp to give me a fighting chance...riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight...

Hector, I'm not Sandy, but you mentioned PJ's KONG and that's a subject that's near and dear to my heart. I know a lot of folks disliked his take on Kong, but I loved it and I thought a lot of that had to do with Andy Serkis' motion capture performance as the great ape. That said, I look forward to seeing his take on Caesar. I think he's gonna make a lot of people sit up and take notice...
