BTW...this is the first Planet of the Apes were the chimpanzee (Caesar) is the LEAD actor...and it's told through his point of view...not the human.

But of course in the opening credits...James Franco will still get top billing in the beginning/end credits...you can't really give top billing to a motion-capture character...lol.

Yeah...that was great...clearly a homage to the original...

The "male" ape makeup was fantastic (the female ape ones were awful, too human and cutesy)...and I really liked Tim Roth's performance...he clearly stole the show.

The Lincoln memorial ending was pretty good.

But the rest was awful...starting with blanked staring zero personality Mark Wahlberg...the females apes looked too human...Paul Giamatti's comedic orangutan persona didn't fit with the rest of the lame story (radically changed in a bad way)... and the back and forth shots of the female chimp and the human female...showing jealousy towards each other fighting over the affection of Marky Mark...was downright comical, creepy, and embarrassing.

Wahlberg changing and influencing the entire ape world overnight was simply beyond laughable.

          Sorry Hec,

That scene plays silly to me. Almost comical... A CG ape flying into the frame from nowhere, tackling the guy and then beating on him, making chimp sounds the whole time, then the chase through the neighborhood? Sorry. This does not work and the Box office numbers will show it.

Not comparing it to the originals or anything, but to me it just looks phony and dumb. There's some genuine emotion on the face in the really tight shots, but anything medium or wide looks fake and silly. Sorry gang...

No different than Avatar...a film you really liked, Sandy.

Oh, I know what you are going to say...the Na'vi are make-believe alien creatures...the apes are real life animals that currently exist on Earth...so we forgive the fake creatures...but the real ones don't get a pass...regardless...they both display the same exact movements on screen...the only difference...one are big giant Smurfs...and the other ones are hairy primates...

I don't love it but don't hate it or dislike it either. It works for me on the strength of Rick Bakers phenomenal make up effects. Even better than the original Apes make up. I love traditional make up effects and Rick Baker is a master and no one does apes better.

I'm sure the new movie will be fine and not gonna knock it for those that like it or are looking forward to it. I have no problem with CGI animated characters in cartoons. But, me personally, I just do not care for CGI animated characters in live action movies.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

                    Here's the difference;

The creatures and characters in "Avatar" are not something that actually exists. There's nothing to compare it to in the real world to look at, and say "That doesn't quite look like a Na'vi..." It's all out of the filmmakers imagination. In this film, the lead character is a chimpanzee, which everyone has seen and knows what they look like.

Because our brains process information the way that they do, it looks phony and silly to most people, especially in the context of that clip.

Again, not trying to argue, just saying that everyone in my circle of friends and associates, thinks this is a total joke. There's no way it's gonna fly and there's CERTAINLY no way the box office revenue from this film will even come remotely close to "Avatar"... Bad example, amigo... LOL Pick another one.

Nothing but love, Hec. You know that.

I loved (and own) all the original Apes films. I also loved the Tim Burton Film. I consider myself kind of a harsh movie critic but I DID LIKE the Tim Burton film.

Oh...come on...now you are trying to compare its potential box office number to Avatar...come on now...you are really trying to be super safe here...lol.

Of course it's not going to approach Avatar numbers...what film is?

I never compared it to Avatar...lol.

You didn't state that in your initial post.

                            You sly, you...

Yes...Rise of the Apes is gonna make lots of money and it will be a box office hit...of course not Avatar numbers...but it's going to be a hit nevertheless.
