MIB as John Locke told Richard to tell real John Locke during the time-travel flashes that John had to bring everyone back to the island. John ask how and Richard said you are going to have to die John.
John Locke during time-travel had been shot by Ethan and then flashed to the future? where he was already dead and his body was inhabited by MIB. Richard comes running out of the jungle and removes the bullet in John's leg and give him the speech.Leave a comment:

If Ben didn't kill Locke I wonder how MIB would have worked his loophole plan....Also makes me wonder if he knew that Ben would kill Locke, thus giving him a dead identity he could steal and manipulate someone (in this case Ben) into killing Jacob.

^ Yeah Ben would have been shut out if he had let Locke live. He wasn't needed....only Oceanic 815ers were necessary. With Locke out of the picture Ben was able to pull the strings to get himself back to the island. Although I thought that anyone that turned the wheel supposedly was never able to go back....but both Ben and Locke (or at least his body) accomplished that feat.Leave a comment:

Ben had just rescued Locke from hanging himself.
Ben knew the key to getting back to the island was with Daniels mother, Eloise Hawking.
As soon as Locke mentioned that he needed to find her, Ben turned on him and killed him.
Ben was afraid that Locke would round everyone up, go to Hawking and return to the island WITHOUT him.
With Locke dead, Ben was back in control...and obviously, in the middle of the island return trip.Leave a comment:

It was never adequately explained (to me, at least) why Ben killed him in the first place. I know he said he was jealous, but I remember the scene and at the time he was trying to convince Locke to go back to the island. He said something and Ben got a look in his eyes and then attacked him.Leave a comment:

I don't mean to sound like I didn't enjoy my six seasons with LOST... it was some of the most entertaining tv ever
And I understand the quandry that any show's writers face in keeping everybody happy... you can't do it. Tastes are different... vanilla... chocolate... rocky road...
I think the thing that rubs most people the wrong way about the ending of the show (not neccessarily just the finale), is that the writers have maintained all along that they knew what was going on and what the end game will be. (from what I've read, what they really knew about the ending is only that the show would close with Jack's eye closing, just as it opened in the pilot's first scene. Everything in the middle was up for grabs, as of day one that is... the plan came later) So, when these strange things began to happen on the island and everyone started asking if there was a rhyme and reason for it all, the viewers were assured that "yes... there is a plan".
But it is evident after the show's ending that the writers did not have a well-developed plan for every strange idea that they introduced into the show. If they did... what reason would they have for withholding that information to the millions of fans of the show?
So... the obvious answer is that they were confident enough in their writing skills that they believed they could write themselves out of any far-out idea that they could throw out there, but in the end, they had boxed themselves into an impossible corner. Now here's the rub... they weren't worried about the end as long as they could keep folks entertained and coming back for more, which we all happily did (I promise, I like the show). But no-one likes to feel fooled.
I guess this show was a lot like the island's treatment of John Locke. The more you loved and invested in the details, the more you were betrayed in the end.Leave a comment:

I dislike the word apologists--but I do recognize "it's all about the characters" has become something of a mantra to whitewash failings in the mythological story.

I have been trying to read a lot of the blogs and articles (and the ones that were linked on this thread, thanks everybody) about the season finale.
One thing is clear; NOBODY OUT THERE got what they wanted in the season finale.
Those seeking answers to the questions are least satisfied and apologists answer with something like "the show was about the characters and the finale had emotional resonance."
That said, while I'm sure the numbers will prove that it was a ratings success, the writers have to know that they fell way short of expectations.Leave a comment:

Did you see that it was ABC that inserted the images of the wreckage on the beach at the very end? They wanted to soften the transition to late local news, but didn't think that some people might obsess like mad over the meaning of it. So stupid. It made a lot of people think that it meant everyone died in the first crash and the whole thing was a dream.Leave a comment:

Mmmm. Reading his Lostpedia entry in general he was searching for the Island (But how could he not know about the Lamp Post station?) or searching for a way back and the fake wreckage was a way to divert attention, which we know.
It's just one of those things they established to give us a sense of a large ominous conspiracy without detailing the actual conspiracy.
