This kitty first showed up to eat last Thursday night, but didn't get him to come to me until Sunday night. He was so skinny and beat up, really rough looking. But what a voice he had, and so friendly and affectionate. We brought him downstairs and put him in the bathroom. Cleaned him up best we could with pet wipes and water, careful not to upset him but he was a trooper. We made up a box for him, gave him food water and litter and he settled right in.
Monday morning we called around at local shelters to see if someone lost him or if they would take him in, a NO on everything. I don't understand , these shelters seek and solicit money from the public to take care of strays, but when you call and say you have one they tell you sorry they don't except drop offs, they only catch loose cats. They said to just turn him back loose and maybe in time they would pick him up.
So we at that point , not wanting another cat, decided he would stay with us. We called for a vet appointment , but they couldn't get us in until this morning. So he stayed downstairs all week , wanting to make sure he was healthy and could meet our girls.
So that takes us up to 8:30 this morning for our vet appointment. Even though we got almost 2 pounds back on him, he was still horribly under weight. The vet said he was an old kitty, she guessed maybe 16 years old. And after a check up the news was horrible. He was anemic, dehydrated , and the infection in his lungs was coming from the kidney failure he was going through. She guessed that the old owner must have turned him out when he started getting sick.
Her final outcome was that he might have a week left at best. This close to the end, as sick as he was he still was a loving cat. So sadly a cat we had only had for a week, but touched our hearts so deeply , we said goodbye to him.
Goodbye Merril, your in pain no more.
Thanks for reading this everyone.
