    Time to feed the cat

Please help me in saying goodbye to Merril :(

This kitty first showed up to eat last Thursday night, but didn't get him to come to me until Sunday night. He was so skinny and beat up, really rough looking. But what a voice he had, and so friendly and affectionate. We brought him downstairs and put him in the bathroom. Cleaned him up best we could with pet wipes and water, careful not to upset him but he was a trooper. We made up a box for him, gave him food water and litter and he settled right in.
Monday morning we called around at local shelters to see if someone lost him or if they would take him in, a NO on everything. I don't understand , these shelters seek and solicit money from the public to take care of strays, but when you call and say you have one they tell you sorry they don't except drop offs, they only catch loose cats. They said to just turn him back loose and maybe in time they would pick him up.
So we at that point , not wanting another cat, decided he would stay with us. We called for a vet appointment , but they couldn't get us in until this morning. So he stayed downstairs all week , wanting to make sure he was healthy and could meet our girls.
So that takes us up to 8:30 this morning for our vet appointment. Even though we got almost 2 pounds back on him, he was still horribly under weight. The vet said he was an old kitty, she guessed maybe 16 years old. And after a check up the news was horrible. He was anemic, dehydrated , and the infection in his lungs was coming from the kidney failure he was going through. She guessed that the old owner must have turned him out when he started getting sick.
Her final outcome was that he might have a week left at best. This close to the end, as sick as he was he still was a loving cat. So sadly a cat we had only had for a week, but touched our hearts so deeply , we said goodbye to him.
Goodbye Merril, your in pain no more.
    Thanks for reading this everyone.

That's sad, but it's good to know you gave the old guy some comfort and a home at the end.

Its good to hear that you took him in and tried to help him out its pretty sad that after that many years someone would just abandon him like that.

I would say Merril's the luckiest kitty in the world, finding such warm hearted people for comfort and shelter at the end of his days.

Thanks buddy ! I guess that is what bothers me the most, how could someone do that to a pet that they've had that long, I know what you went through with Shadow, and know for certain that you could have never thought to do such a thing.

Youre a good man, Charlie Brown. Merril was lucky to find you and have his suffering eased at the end.

Well, you know I'm a cat guy and I'm both sad and happy with this story. It's like I tell Sandy, you can't save them all. To think otherwise is to torture yourself and bring unwarranted pressure into your lives. Take comfort that you did everything possible and that he left this world not alone, but with someone who actually cared and tried.

In our previous home years ago, we had a tailless stray that came every day and slept on our patio. We simply named him Buddy. We fed him but could not take him in and endanger our indoor only cats. We built a little shelter out there. He'd greet us whenever the car pulled up. The property manager said we'd have to try and find him a home. A shelter worker came and took him and promised to help. I think she took him to her home several miles away, but we were never certain. Three weeks later we came home from the grocery and there he was on the patio waiting for us! I never figured out how. We kept him there for another couple of weeks until I found a co-worker to take him, where he still lives.

Few stories end up this way, but when they do it really is refreshing to see a happy ending.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.
