Favorite 80's cartoons ?

The LATE 80's I think were pretty bad. Not much happening there during the weekends or weekdays. The only show I was really into for the most part was Pee-Wees playhouse.

Fox kids in the '90s was such a good time. Some pretty good toons during that time. Also Tiny Tunes, Animaniacs, and Pinky and the Brain are some of the best cartoons produced in the 90's period.


I was really into the Simpsons the first five or six years. I still like the Simpson, but I think the newer episodes arent as good for some reason. Far from bad compared to some of the other stuff ive seen though. I dont like American Dad, etc.

The Simpsons were better back then because they Brad Bird working on it.

I liked a lot of the ones already mentioned. Now I was in my teens in the 80s, so back then I never admitted to my friends that I still watched Saturday morning cartoons or cartoons in general, but then when some of my friends admitted to it, then it became OK. Boy, teen years were great.

I will also shamelessly admit to liking the 80's Ruby Spears version of the Chipmunks.

The Real Ghostbusters up until Full House Dave Coulier took over for Venkman. Then it just goes to hell real quick. The Slimer episodes are downright unwatchable. My favorite all time cartoon series ever though...Batman The Animated Series. Almost 30 years later, I can watch any episode today and enjoy it just as much (if not more) then as a kid.

It wasn't a bad show at all.... even though it differed from the books a fair bit. DIC in the early 80's produced some decent stuff. As has been mentioned a couple times, the late 80's were a down period 'cos companies dicovered you could use really cheap animation and people would still watch. (Check out any DIC stuff from '88 and up.) That, and the Japanese animation industry had taken off and they didn't work cheap any moe.

I always thought The Littles was well made. Like most saturday morning cartoons there just wasn't enough episodes.

IMO, this is the last really good cartoon in the eighties: Ruby-Spears Superman (this may have been the companies last cartoon also.)

Because of syndication the 80s was actually an explosion of animation. You no longer had to wait for saturday morning for cartoons and the syndicated cartoons didn't have such severe censorship restrictions on them. No way something like the Inhumanoids would have been possible on saturday morning. Disney also had a lot of great cartoons in the 80s like Gummi Bears and the syndicated Duck Tales and Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers.

I remember seeing Duck Tales and being surprised and impressed by the quality - but I think I only saw a couple of random episodes the whole time it was on the air. If it was out when I was younger it would have been a favorite of mine, I think.

80's Mighty Mouse did totally rule!
Only found out recently that John Kricfalusi (Ren & Stimpy) directed a bunch of episodes, which explains their greatness. Mighty Mouse even has the gross-out close-ups that John K later used in Ren & Stimpy.
