We've seen this depraved behavior of secrecy before...in the Catholic Church.

While it may be shocking and unbelievable to see that Paterno will be allowed to continue through the end of the year, let's not forget that there are dozens of Cardinals & Bishops in this country that are guilty of the exact same type of disgusting enablement who continue to hold their positions.

Cardinal Roger Mahony of the Los Angeles Archdiocese, the worst of the worst, not only maintains his "stature" despite the fact that he covered up the actions of several offenders, he is actually REVERED by both the church hierarchy and the church-going community.

Joe's announced his retirement, and most probably will not coach anything left of the season. However, PSU board of Trustees can still fire him outright, that has not been decided yet.

I still don't understand why Mike McQueary (the grad asst & former PS quarterback) has avoided being called out by the media as well, at least to the full extent JoPa has. This clown actually WALKED in on the crime scene in progress and RAN AWAY to call his dad for advice. Who sees something that horrible happening to a child and doesn't act to get the boy to safety? I'm no scrapper, but I'd like to believe my first human reaction would have been to clobber the creep with whatever I could get my hands on, get the child safe, and call the cops. At the VERY LEAST, he should have went for help! This guy is just as much a coward & monster, and deserves to be called out for it as well.

And Joe Paterno has just been fired, removed immediatly from his position by the University, along with the President Spanier.
Sad end to a lengthy career.

ANYONE who commits or allows this type of heinous crime against a child needs to be removed from the planet in the most painful way possible. There is no reform of these people, and I use that word very loosely. There is no prison or punishment currently on the books that is a worthy penalty for these mother****ers. Pardon the use of the naughty word filter but these type of things deserve the harshest words possible.

The NCAA should step up as well. The entire program needs to feel the consequences of this LONG TERM crime. Suspend their athletic program indefinitely. They DO NOT deserve the financial benefit of NCAA participation.

I can't say more without exploding the swear filter. **** them.

I wonder if they'll take down Paterno's statue.

There's a mural in town with heroes of Penn State, and the artist painted over Jerry Sandusky today to wipe him out of the picture.

Legend or not, Paterno got what he deserved for covering this up and allowing it to continue.

This. I'm done reading all social media and forum discussion on this until more facts come out. (Not a Penn State grad, but my dad is)

I understand the pain it causes when a beloved hero that you think can do no wrong is accused of something like this. It is confusing and very disheartening.

but...Joe Paterno is not bigger than Penn State. Nothing he says or doesn't say will change what has happened.

Joe Paterno enabled a sexual predator to run free on his campus. He could have stopped this.

Eventually what did Joe Paterno in is the cover-up. When will people in leadership and high positions learn that when you conceal and hide stuff like this it will eventually be your undoing.

I pity the man. He could have single handedly changed the course of this whole situation. He and others chose not to.

I agree!! The grad student that witnessed the boy being abused only to walk away is the first one I would ball bat then I would go down the line to every one else that FAILED TO CALL THE POLICE!!!! There was a student riot last night. They destroyed property, tossed rocks at the police, etc. Why don't they focus that same anger at the freaking child molester and everyone that helped cover it up? Unbelievable!

Joe Paterno was correctly relieved of his duties. I have watched with utter disbelief as this man has celebrated HIMSELF while all of these horrid revelations have been coming out. He is completely delusional and detached from reality. Here we have scores of kids who were sexually assaulted on Penn State property under this guy's watch and all he can do is talk about himself and throw out the occasional "think about the victims' for good measure. How impossibly selfish. I have watched this individual who was SUPPOSE to be the very symbol of doing the 'RIGHT' thing, completely cave under deplorable excuses for why he didn't do what most people would have done given these circumstances. From my perspective, there is no 'gray' area here. If someone comes to you and reports an inappropriate situation with a child, there is NOTHING to misunderstand. He says, "Well I vaguely remember something about "fondling" or "touching" or 'horsing around' to some effect." REALLY? You can almost hear him trying to edit himself as he searches for the words to describe it. "No...'fondling' sounds bad...let's try 'touching'. No that sounds worse. Oh here's one... 'horsing around'. Yeah that sounds more innocent so I don't look so bad."

Yeah, great morality and honor on display there Joe. What a puke. And don't be a bit surprised if this guy doesn't get civilly sued before this is all said and done. And it won't be because of this one boy. It will be because of the boys that came after this event, because Paterno looked the other way. Paterno knew something really bad happened and took the coward's way out to cover his arse. He was negligent. He was doing then as he is doing now...Thinking only about himself and his legacy. Sorry Joe. Your legacy is made... Coward and a fraud. Good riddens to him.
