I understand that it must be strange & scary for the East Coast to experience a quake of this magnitude, especially post 9/11, and I can can completely empathize with individual reactions.
However, some of the hype & hysteria I see coming from the media & public officials would be borderline comical if it wasn't actually scaring people. It's almost as absurd as when L.A. gets a rainstorm projected to drop 1/4" of rain and the news crews switch to "STORM WATCH" mode.
Sleep soundly East Coast. The first aftershock is usually the worst, and I believe that one came in at 2.8? There is no threat of a Tsunami, the quake happened far enough inland and was not 7.5 or greater.
The good news is that it will probably be another century or so before the next one!

I personally appreciate good wishes, but this was one of the biggest non-events ever. Here in NYC a torrential rainstorm we had a few weeks back caused more damage. Anyone affected by this who was not near the epicenter—which was in Virginia in a very unpopulated area—needs to get some therapy.Leave a comment:

Holy crap guys glad you are all okay! I just read about when I started my computer. Be safe and be very aware.Leave a comment:

Out here in central PA we felt it in the offices here on the 3rd floor of the hospital. Was a weird swaying feeling for about 10 seconds. At first I thought it was just me getting dizzy or something and then everyone commented on it.
I expected to come home and find action figures all over the floor, but nothing fell. Not even the JLUs, and they usually topple if you look at them too hard! Hope everyone else's collections went unscathed!Leave a comment:

LOL...How did I know that was going to happen John...LOL
It felt like a mini-hangover...the world was swaying and not matter what I grabbed to try and make it stop, it wouldn't.
They evacuated our building and we stayed in the parking lot for about 30 mins before letting us back in.
I was actually the 1st one out of the building...
Joking aside...whenever stuff like this happens, I have 911 flashbacks and the 1st thought in my head is run home...I was outta there!!!Last edited by WannabeMego; Aug 23, '11, 8:20 PM.Leave a comment:

Pretty astonishing when you really think about the fact that if the earth's crust moves just a wee bit, most everything man ever constructs can be laid waste in a matter of seconds. Mother Nature, Act of God--whatever you want to call it---humans ain't got a thing on either one (except, or course, for the A and H Bombs...)Pretty good analogy. The weird feeling is looking off into the NYC horizon, realizing this thing centered in Virginia yet we felt it all the way here. Pretty astonishing when you think of the sheer power of something like that. And pretty humbling when you realize this was 100% nothing compared to other recent earthquakes.Leave a comment:

We had a small one rumble through here a few years back and it almost feels like the earth is trying to shrug you off. Very strange sensation.Leave a comment:

I'm here in Richmond. There were a few reports of structural damage, some traffic lights out, etc. in the area. But sounds like no real injuries. And no damage at the house. But it was a little eerie. Especially when I pulled up the earthquake coordinates on Google maps. "Wait, isn't that where the North Anna nuclear plant is?" I think it only hit about 15 miles away for it...Leave a comment:

Same thing I thought of, too. I am only about 20 miles outside of DC at work. My mind first went to Earthquake, but then since it was only like 10 sec long I thought something created that rumble. Actually glad it was an earthquake. There was an aftershock, but it was only 2.8.Actually, the first thing I thought was a terrorist attack had just occurred. I am 50 miles outside of Washington D.C. so it's almost a conditioned response since we rarely feel any earthquakes around here. Now that I know what happened; I'm ok with after shocks.Leave a comment:

The very first day I lived in Portland, I felt an earthquake. Our furniture hadn't arrived yet and I was sitting in a window still when I felt the wall shaking a bit. I was wondering what we were getting into! I've only noticed one more in the 12 years I've been here. Luckily we never had a serious one here, but I guess we are overdue for a big one.Leave a comment:
