BTW...I grew up with a Siberian Husky, a Boxer...and a German Shepherd..three large and powerful breeds...all fantastic companions.

However...my favorite buddy was my Miniature Pinscher...I had him for 16 years...the best dog I've ever had...he died in 2006.

I've had a pair of red belly piranhas for 13 years as well...but old age also got them.

    No pets since.

Dogs are dogs, and like guns any dog can do harm if not handled correctly.

Breed of dog with the highest instance of attack on humans? Cocker Spaniels... Pit Bulls have a bad rap because they are relentless when they do attack. As a breed they are no more or less psychotic than any other breed. They are Terriers -- much like a Yorkie.

          Don't go underestimating Yorkies...

Yorkshire Terriers were not bred as lap dogs. They were used to hunt rats first in the Coal Mines and then the textile plants of Industrial England. They were also used for vermin control in the home. It was an old custom to give the smaller sized Yorkies to a family that had a newborn for precisely the same reason. Yorkies were originally much larger -- as high as 40 lbs -- and have been bred down to the size of a lap dog, but their Terrier instinct is intact.

Another factoid: during the development of the Airedale Terrier, Yorkshire Terriers bloodlines were introduced into the mix to make the Airedale more terrier-like.

All this information is available from the AKC, or your local SPCA.

I hate to come off harsh but that is incorrect and a bit irresponsible.

Pitbulls have a bad rap because when the do attack people, children, smaller dogs they tear them to shreds. A pitbull is maybe comparable to a loaded gun but Yorkie and toy breeds aren't. I love dogs too but you've got to be honest and realistic about it. If you want to use the gun analogy, you could say that a pit is like a gun that can fire itself at any momment.

Guard dogs, attack dogs and as well as working dogs require special care, exercise, supervision and handling. They can also be ill suited for apartment living/family dogs/people with small children and the elderly. Not every type of dog breed is suited for every family or purpose. A teacup Poodle is illsuited to guard a warehouse and a large aggresive breed is illsuited as a pet for a child.

            Don't go underestimating Yorkies...
People don't get mauled by Yorkies.

Yorkshire Terriers were not bred as lap dogs. They were used to hunt rats first in the Coal Mines and then the textile plants of Industrial England.
And Poodles were originally retrievers. But my four pound teacup poodle would not be even able to lift a duck let alone retrieve it.

Yorkies are companion dogs. That's what they are bred for. Their working dog days are long, long past. They would not survive in coal mines hunting rats. They are house pets.

This dog is a dog stuff is just not being realistic, in my opinion. Certain breeds are just more apt to agression and when when a pit does attack it is merciless. It will not let up. It is tremendously strong and will maul it's victim.

I just would not cannot recommend certain attack/guard breeds like pits and rots to people who have small children. I understand it might seem cool or macho to have a dog like a pit bull, but it's not worth the risk in some cases. My mother's friend thought her pit was the sweetest dog in the world until it tried to kill her other dog.

As I stated earlier many states even have breed specific laws do to the high instances of attacks.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Werewolf, I agree there sure is some "reality bending" in this thread if I've
ever seen it ....and for what....a dog breed's reputation. I find it odd.

If people want a "macho" dog I recommend the English Bulldog. It's a calm affectionate loyal family dog and is good with children. They are also well suited for indoors and apartment living.

Amazing...a faithful and heroic pit bull saved his master's life...and instead of praising this magnificent dog...it has turned into an anti-pit bull thread...

Just because you or I have been, let's say, unsuccessful in our reproductive endeavours doesn't mean other people don't have children. So having a pet that is safe around children would be an important issue for many people.

Yes, I have. Doesn't bother me. I've been around all kinds of dogs from big to small. I even had a wolf pup fall a sleep in my arms at a pow wow when I was in my teens. It was a pretty awesome experience. My sister currently has two big rescue dogs which I adore and often sit for.
