It's not a remake - except for the fact that the Castellari movie takes place during WWII and Tarantino used the title - the two films have nothing in common. The original movie is not really a contemporary of all those American movies you mentioned either - It came out in 1978, nearly 10 years later - it was just a rip-off of those movies, specifically The Dirty Dozen. It even starred Fred Williamson in place of Jim Brown, and featured the tagline "Whatever the Dirty Dozen did they do it dirtier!"
It's also much MUCH campier/trashier than the Tarantino movie.
I know that the impulse is to think that Tarantino took this little-known gem of a movie and ripped it off - but the truth is that the original movie is just a typical 70s exploitive Italian trash movie.
