It's not a remake - except for the fact that the Castellari movie takes place during WWII and Tarantino used the title - the two films have nothing in common. The original movie is not really a contemporary of all those American movies you mentioned either - It came out in 1978, nearly 10 years later - it was just a rip-off of those movies, specifically The Dirty Dozen. It even starred Fred Williamson in place of Jim Brown, and featured the tagline "Whatever the Dirty Dozen did they do it dirtier!"

It's also much MUCH campier/trashier than the Tarantino movie.

I know that the impulse is to think that Tarantino took this little-known gem of a movie and ripped it off - but the truth is that the original movie is just a typical 70s exploitive Italian trash movie.

Great idea - I'll give it a shot for sure!

Of the ten, I've only seen Avatar, District 9, and Up, and I think all three are deserving of the Best Picture nod. That said, I hope Avatar walks away with the prize.

Yep, I was going to post almost the same thing but you beat me to it.

I'm a huge QT fan, and I loved INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, so I'm thrilled to see it get nominated for eight awards. I have a bad feeling that it will get undeservedly shut out by AVATAR for some of the awards (just like PULP FICTION was undeservedly shut out by FORREST GUMP back in the 90s) but at the very least Christoph Waltz should get the Best Supporting Actor nod, his performance seriously deserves it.

If he doesn't win, I'll never watch the Oscars ever again.

Haven't seen any of that list yet, but I will see a couple... eventually
