An amazing 10 movies nominated for Best Picture Oscar this year

10 Best Picture Nominees Change the Oscar Landscape - The 82nd Annual Academy Awards® on Yahoo! Movies

Oscar nominations 2010: Helen Mirren, Carey Mulligan and Colin Firth fly the flag for Britain at the Academy Awards | Mail Online

    Best Picture

    Avatar
    The Blind Side
    District 9
    An Education
    The Hurt Locker
    Inglourious Basterds
    Precious
    A Serious Man
    Up
    Up In The Air

    I know it's for ratings.

More movies...more appeal to a wider audience.

Still...I like it...now you get flicks like Inglorious Basterds and District 9 being nominated for Best Picture.

    The biggest snub though?

    Star Trek...bloody hell...

Having said that...having ten flicks could split the vote.

Wouldn't it be glorious if District 9 was to win the BIG one?

    That would absolutely rule...lol...

I've seen only two of those and both in the past week as rentals and if the rest of them are as crappy as those two then I don't want to see ANY of the rest.

I've seen these ones, and thought they were all pretty great. I'm surprised that none of these movies appeal to you, they're all fairly diverse compared to previous years picks. What movies did you like this year?

                District 9
                The Hurt Locker
                Inglourious Basterds

I believe the decision was for ratings and also pressure by the studios because nominated films get a boost in the box office.

The Oscars got hit with low ratings last year...all due to snubbing The Dark Knight in all the major categories.

That's why they have ten now....great of all kinds of different movie tastes.

I'm not saying your wrong - you're 100% right - the Oscar ratings have been declining in the last few years. A lot of people have also noted that in the last few years the best picture nominees were represented by lower budget and more esoteric films. The usual box-office boost generated by the Oscars has also been in a gradual decline resulting in pressure from the studios for these changes.

The intent is to exclude less of the hit movies to generate more interest in the Oscars, AND regain the box office boost nominated films use to receive.

The Oscar ratings have been going down because people are tired of watching a bunch of self-congratulating, pontificating, elitist snobs with no sense of morals or values.
Oh and by the way...the 2 movies I was referring to:
District 9 (first half was so dull and convoluted I almost stopped watching it. Not to mention it was totally unbelievable)
Inglorious Basterds (dumb plot, not historically accurate, no real payoff at the end and the worst accent by an actor in decades from Brad Pitt)
You couldn't PAY me to watch Avatar.
and Dark Knight is STILL the most overrated movie of all time.

....when you can get PLENTY of that in less time on the internets. Seriously; there's SO MUCH commentary on EVERYTHING online that you gotta wonder if awards shows have any relevance any more. 'Specially since I can log in and get my commentary in whichever flavour I prefer.

                              >Dark Knight is STILL the most overrated movie of all time.

There are some contenders, but you're right.
