I would have to go with Star Wars too.

I think SW is in a league of its own, so I won't pick this obvious one.

              I'd go for:
Soylent Green, POTA series, Omega Man, Silent Running, Rollerball, Westworld, Damnation Alley.

They gave a very stark image of how people in the 70s felt the future would be: grim, pre/post-apocalyptic, the Earth being abused by Humanity.
This is basically a period that started off with POTA, and ended when Jaws came along. Spielberg's optimism put a stop to the "depressing future" image...
              .
              .
              .
"When things are at their darkest, it's a brave man that can kick back and party."

You may have been kidding, but I think these may be a better representation of what life was like in the 70s than any other films that have been mentioned...at least, that's kind of what I imagine my life could have been like if I had been an adult in the 70s.

                Godfather
                even Star Wars

It's like those movies could have been made in any decade.
I agree with what others here have said: If these movies had been made in another decade, they wouldn't have been the same. Honestly, my first thought was Star Wars because that was such an influential movie for the late 70s. If we're just talking about a movie that represents the 70s as they were, I think either 'Dazed and Confused' or 'Almost Famous' would represent the 70s better than anything actually made in the 70s.

OK, for a movie made in the 70s that looks like the 70s and represents what the 70s were all about PLUS being a movie that I would actually want someone to watch, I guess nothing can beat KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park. You can keep Rocky, KISS are the real underdog fighters! You can keep Jaws, Gene Simmons is the real fearsome Beast! And although I love Star Wars, Ace is the #1 man from space!
Nostalgia just ain’t what it used to be.
