I'm reading through this list and there is virtually nothing that I would disagree with.

Conclusion: Mike threw out a great question because the 1970's was probably the best decade EVER for Hollywood Movies....period! You name a genre, and the 70s had a GREAT movie for it.

      >It's like those movies could have been made in any decade.

Could; but wouldn't. The definition of "right" would have changed and we wouldn't get the same film. (Films are affected by the environmrnt of their conception.) Star Wars would feature a much angrier cast were it made today; Jaws would have a CGI shark with bony plates, ropy tendons and all sorts of other extranuous details, and Saturday Night Fever WOULDN'T have been made at all, since it's such a bleak and hopeless film. (Although it WOULD have been made in the 90's.... but likely with an ironic twist.)

But hey; no love for the Star Wars Holiday Special?

For me the movie that captures the 70's and just screams time capsule film is OVER THE EDGE......

I go with Star Wars because while it could have been made in any decade the way it wa smade screams 70's. I'd include Saturday Night Fever as a runner up. Doesn't get much more 70's than SNF.

It's a Toss-Up between "Debbie Does Dallas" and "Deep Throat".

as far as horror films go "omen", that scared the crap out of me, with the blackbirds and music.
