I don't know much about GFR but they sure get mad respect around the music boards I frequent.

They seem like a cool classic rock band to me.

Most times Mike---the music isn't the full deal---as you know because
that's a big part of the origins of this thread

Led Zep has tons more mystique than GFR---so that accounts for something.

You know that saying "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful."

Well---I don't think people should hate on Zep JUST because they were so popular over other bands.

Zep were a dang fine rock band.

                    Zemo 1...Mike 0.

It's not even funny...Led Zep is like a hungry male lion in his prime...while Grand Funk is like a zebra carcass.

                      >anyone who would put Led Zepp on an overrated list has never tried to play their music or really understands what their hearing.

I think Zep is one of them groups that really had a big effect on music as a whole, even though a lot of people might not be aware of it. I don't like them either; but a lot of people co-opted their style, and as a result several new genres of music came about.

'Course it's all a progression. Zep wouldn't have happened without the heavier "acid rock" of the late 60's/early 70's. THAT wouldn't have happened if the Beatles hadn't gone all psychedellic. The Beatles started as an old school skiffle/rockabilly kind of band, which wouldn't have happened without Elvis. Elvis wouldn't have happened without the the jazz and blues music of the 40's....

So all you Iron Maiden haters out there remeber: it's Elvis' fault.

Into this mix comes a LOT of mediocre music. I'm okay with that. There's nothing wrong with liking something that's not so good. (Or downright awful....) But people have a problem of NEEDING stuff they like to have relevance and import. (Kinda like the last big music thread, with the idea that there always has to be a "winner" for the fans.) And my big problem with THAT is when it becomes a reflex response. It limits discourse 'cos you get a lot of "NO! They're BRILLIANT!!!" without any explanation. And it's the explanation that makes the actual discussion.

I would be hard pressed to see Britney Spears as a musical genius, but if someone wanted to defend that point I'd certainly listen.

                      >until you actually learn how to play a git-box your opinion is really based on nothing

I wholeheartedly disagree, especially with the last part. The audience is DEFINITELY a part of the music. Isn't that where the drive and energy comes from? Isn't that the reason for putting on a show? You can twang away at home and tell yourself how great you are, but it's not until it's YOU up there, in front of all them people, that you REALLY find out who you are. Winning them over, pulling them in, directing the will of dozens, or hundreds, or thousands of people?

                      Do or die, eh?

A pro is gonna be interested in things that an audience isn't. But your audience is a HUGE part of the process, and I think it's artisticly dangerous to dismiss them so easily.
