the Bono-haters a bone"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris MannixComment

I'm not a huge PEARL JAM fan----they bore the heck out of me
and I'd never choose to listen to them---but that doesn't mean
I'm gonna say that's a good reason that they shouldn't be
rated so highly by the masses.
Obviously, there's some massive appeal there....fact.
I respect that.
That being said, I have seen Pearl Jam live, and it was among the best live performances I have ever seen. And I see a LOT of bands. Admittedly it was a long time ago (around 1990 or so, they were an opening band) so I don't know how well their live show has fared. But it is an event that sticks with me and keeps me from dismissing performers as over-rated simply because I have issues with their particular take on music.Comment

Hue's comment brings up a different take on this for me... I find Pearl Jam to be insufferably boring. I wouldn't say I dislike them, as that would imply their music is able to stir me to some kind of emotion. It actually is hard for me to focus on them.

to type out----but I had the same experience---dragged to a PJ show
in 1997 or so----huge place----Tweeter in Camden----and I was impressed
with how solid the show was in SPITE of the fact that I'm not really into
their music at ALL----saw RUSH there a few months later---
I had to leave"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris MannixComment

>who are YOU to tell him he can't do it because he's a rock star?
True; but I don't think being a rock star makes him an authority on current events. MY big problem here isn't Bono, it's the fans who apparently would never have realized there are problems around the world if he hadn't pointed it out to them. And then wave it around without, you know, actually DOING anything to help. So for the band it becomes almost a marketing gimmick. "They're cool 'cos they care." Then they become invulnerable 'cos if you say anything bad about their music you're slamming the poor, hungry children of the world.
They may very well be the most caring, compassionate people on Earth, but their music still sucks.
>Kanye West- Seriously this Clown said he wanted to be bigger Than Elvis.
He's gonna need more cheeseburgers.
I think the whole last round of rappers have been horrid. It was all marketing and product placement.

I think it's endearing just like the Beatles, y'know.
Now, I happen to be an actual Beatles fan...and not a U2 fan---
but that's just me. You would think there'd be others like me who actually
knew what kind of music they liked....enough to make a choice of what to
listen to.

At first glance, your theory sounds like a lot of conjecture.
They may very well be the most caring, compassionate people on
Earth, but their music still sucks.
I like a few U2 songs though...hooky and interesting enough.
(WITH OR WITHOUT YOU is a classic... undeniable)
They are just a rock band after all---I don't expect Beethoven's 5th
or whatever.
This thread seems to be LITTERED with those that think because a
band's sound is rudimentary, that's a good enough reason to say
the band sucks...I resent that mindset... it's elitist at best.
(I don't want to say what it is at worst!)"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. >And what's wrong with that? "Good vibes" and all.
Ultimately nothing; but U2 is a sticking point for me 'cos they were so unavoidable when I was younger. (Same with NIne Inch Nails, but they're not as prevalent.)
>Really? You've actually witnessed that kind of reaction to your hate for U2?
Many, many times. Moreso prior to the ipod ad and last album.
>This thread seems to be LITTERED with those that think because a

Well.... I don't know if being resentful is quite founded. When people say that a rudimentary sound is bad they're defining their definition of "good." They might not realize that's what they're doing, but they are. "Good" is probably THE most subjective concept ever. But that doesn't mean you can't debate it, but you're gonna hafta do some prodding to find out what a specific person means when they use it.
For myself, I tend not to like the more simple and repetitive songs. I like when there's a lot going on, and find it impressive when someone can co-ordinate it all into one harmonious sound. That's why I didn't care for the boy bands, the pop princesses or the last crop of rappers. I'm more impressed with the TECHNICAL skill behind a group like Nightwish or Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I also find the thicker sound MUCH more satisfying. With a song like "Planet Hell" or "Christmas Eve:Sarajevo 12/24" it SOUNDS like something's happening.
Lyrics are important to me too. Most of Iron Maiden's music sounds alike to me, but it's the stuff they write about that I think is neat. They've written about WW2 air raids ("Aces High," which is almost a training manual for 'em) Minamoto Musashi ("Sunlight and Steel") the Doomsday Clock ("Two Minutes to Midnight") prophecy, especially Nostradamus ("Die With Your Boots On") and the question as to wether or not there's a higher purpose to it all. ("Fates Warning.") There's something you can wrap your head around there. Same with groups like Jethro Tull and Big Rude Jake; who have a tendency to present unusual takes on common situations. ("The Whaler's Dues" presents the HUNTER'S perspective on whaling, which I've never heard before.) That's why I never found U2's "war is bad" songs all that deep. Yeah, they're RIGHT but there's no insight: no explanation as to why it happens, no new takes on the motivations and feelings of those involved, nothing really past the whole "it's bad" idea. Stuff I already knew. (I think the best "war is bad" music I've heard is the "Dead Winter Dead" album by Savatage. There are songs about how it starts, why people get involved, who capitalizes on it, the effects it has on people....)
...so hopefully that kinda clears up my position. And hopefully a few more folks will add their perspectives too.

use simple ideas to make great songs----great hooks---and secondly,
because I am comitted to writing great songs with simple construction
myself....I think it's a noble endeavor.
Admitedly this is my OPINION, and I realize that..but...
for people to dislike music JUST because it's simple doesn't make sense
to me because it doesn't appear to be a good enough reason.
However, opinion of what KIND of simple music you prefer makes MORE sense
---it's all how you cook it up. There's a lot of simillarity between
certain "simple" musicians and their songs---but chord changes---
melodic choices and lyric writing all play a part in making those
"simple aspects"---unique and you can pick and choose what you prefer.
EXAMPLE:
I like THE RAMONES...I don't like (most of) BRITNEY SPEARS.
"Complicated" music or "heavily arranged" music, isn't as impressive
to me----the more that something is taken away from "rocking"---
the more that something is taken into a place of being "over-thought"
then the less visceral the music is for me---and the less I like it.
Although I respect it.
I could never bring myself to sit here and say IRON MAIDEN sucks
or PEARL JAM sucks because I never want to listen to them.
Although I always have a few choice words for the
mindset that makes one a fan of those bands---so, I AM guilty
in that way.
The best I can offer regarding this is that
to like a musician because they are "complicated" is just as inane
a reason to like a band as it is to like a band simply because they are "simple".
I suspect that you don't like EVERY band that decides to write in a crazy
rhythmic meter---has 8 distinct parts to a song---and "thought provoking"
lyrics---just like I don't like every "simple" band."No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris MannixComment

>for people to dislike music JUST because it's simple doesn't make sense

Hmmmm.... I think there's a difference between "simple" and "simplistic." There are a lot of groups I like that are pretty simple, but they don't write repetitive music, and they still manage to challenge in some way. The stuff I dislike would be better called "simplistic." Very basic music that progresses in a linear fashion backed with lyrics that state the obvious, or ideas so shallow as to not really be ideas.
>I like THE RAMONES...I don't like (most of) BRITNEY SPEARS.
There's a good example. Both write pretty threadbare songs; but the Ramones offer a lot of odd imagry and ideas. ("I wanna be sedated....") Britney's songs are either her bragging, or whining, neither of which is particularly novel or meaningful to anyone who's NOT Britney. ("I SHOULD be sedated....")
>I always have a few choice words for the mindset that makes one a fan of those bands
ELITIST!!!!!
>I could never bring myself to sit here and say IRON MAIDEN sucks or PEARL JAM sucks because I never want to listen to them.
....whereas I can say U2 sucks 'cos I HAVE listened to them.At least you're honest about that. I've had a lot of folks complain about stuff I like, and when I ask them to elucidate I find they've never heard anything by the band but are just assuming they don't like it because they've never heard of them. Go fig.
