He was the hardest working man in show business, while Robert Plant does a 40 minute set and leaves. GG would still be on stage, eating some poop and entertaining the crowd. What he lacked in talent, he made up for in sheer determination.

If I have to hear GG's rendition of the Twelve Days of Christmas on the radio one more time I'm going to put a cigar out in a hooker's eye.

If GG wasn't dead, I'd swear he was the department store Santa this year. Smelt like him, and I thought I heard him humming "Everybody knows I'm a Scumbag" instead of xmas tunes.

Not a big fan of these kinds of threads, because not much good ever comes of it

Instead, I like reading the "most UNDERrated" threads because then at least if someone makes a good or passionate statement about an artist they really like, it might entice me into checking out someone new or someone I've overlooked in the past. I'm far more interested in getting turned onto something new than bickering with people about what's "overrated", basically meaning "something that people like that I can't personally stand", hehe.

            >I could never bring myself to sit here and say IRON MAIDEN sucks or PEARL JAM sucks because I never want to listen to them.

....whereas I can say U2 sucks 'cos I HAVE listened to them. At least you're honest about that. I've had a lot of folks complain about stuff I like, and when I ask them to elucidate I find they've never heard anything by the band but are just assuming they don't like it because they've never heard of them. Go fig.
            Sorry---my apologies.

When I said "never"---I meant SINCE hearing most of their material.

            I've heard at least 80 percent of those band's disographies---I still can't
            stand them.

(I still give them credit for having big fanbases---but for their "smart" lyrics---
no freakin' way----I'd rather listen to nursery rhymes!)

I'll try to be more clear next time!

            >I always have a few choice words for the mindset that makes one a fan of those bands

            ELITIST!!!!!
Dang straight----you left out the part where I said..."so, I AM guilty
            in that way."
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix

A friend of mine told me this story:

A friend of ours was in a band in the mid 80's with GG as the opener. Of course GG did his whole routine--as usual pretty wild. Anyway, after GG was done, our friend's band was setting up and doing a quick line-check before they were to play. Their singer steps up to the mic to give it the 'ol "Testing 1-2-3-4" when he suddenly jerks back shouting with a look of horror on his face. Turns out the mic had not been switched out after GG's set and well, let's just say, it had a distinct and specific aroma....

These threads make me laugh. Nothing like critics that can't play. I know there's a couple of you who do, but for the rest, until you actually learn how to play a git-box your opinion is really based on nothing. Here's Eric Johnson, ever heard of him? Probably one of the top 5 players in the world.

Why does one have to play an instrument in order to be a critic ?

That's the same as saying a person who doesn't play an instrument can't really enjoy music.

                    I agree with that logic.

                    Once again though...

I will re-iterate, that the KIND of critic I don't like is the one that
pooh-poohs "simple" or "pop" music merely because that's what it is.

To me that's like disliking a plain hamburger because it's simple.

Meat and potatoes, jeans and a T-shirt----yadda, yadda

I guess that would be me, because I simply can't stand manufactured music that has no soul or talent. Music is created by musicians, pop is entertainment and only the non skilled need apply.

That may have been over the top, but imo anyone who would put Led Zepp on an overrated list has never tried to play their music or really understands what their hearing.

Music's definition is (and should be) defined by each individual listener.

I think Zepplin is over-rated because they seem to have been made rock-gods today.

Like I said, I like Zepplin, but I don't think they're any better then 99% of any of the other bands that came out of the 70's.

Why isn't Grand Funk known as rock-gods today, etc ?

Led Zep are indeed better than 99% of 70s bands...that's the thing...lol.

Led Zep craps all over Grand Funk...that's why.
