I might catch some flak for this but I'm saying Pink Floyd. I just don't get why everyone swoons over them. Every time I hear them I want to fall asleep.

I forgot to mention Billy Joel. And I do think Phil and Genesis are big and huge enough to be considered overrated.

        >U2 - It should not only be a law to seperate church and state, but also music and state. Writing commercial "fluff" doesn't, in my book, qualify you to be a politician or a representative of those who have social agendas. Geraldo should be their lead singer.

YES! It's about time I saw some hate for U2. Polticizing aside, their music SUCKS! It's flat, reprtitive, musically simplistic and insanely sanctimonious in the most coarse and obvious way! "War is bad." Thanks U2, I never would have figgered that one out on my own.

I'd also add durned near every 90's grunge/indie rock band. That whole StoneJamChilliGarden era was terrible! Whiney, self-indulgent lyrics, baseline music, and inescapable hype, hype, hype.

And the Doors? Oh man, the Doors.... Had a friend play them for me years ago and it was tough to tell when one song ended and another started. Ol' Jim's singing was one step above monotone and the band sure got a lot of use out of them same three bars of music.

Ironicly, most of the bands that have been considered "influential" over the years really bother me 'cos most of their influence has been in the areas of marketing more than adding anything to music as a whole.

I've never gotten on the U2 bandwagon either, made college hard sometimes.

The one band I can no longer listen to is the Clash, I like them a lot but my first year room mate only owned one record and played it in constant rotation. i think he was insane.

Also, a lot of Motown stuff makes my skin crawl, I'm so frigging tired of hearing that stuff everywhere.

This post isn't directed just to Don---but to many people commenting in
this thread----where is the "rule" that rock music has to be
something other than simple---or repetitive---- or otherwise
            "unimpressive" technically.

            It's only rock 'n roll---but I like it.

            Y'know?

Alotta you guys seem to mistake "accessible" for "untalented".

I think it's a talent in itself to exploit the basic rock stuff---
and make it work for the masses (or at least a big chunk of it).

I might not like every band's take on doing it----and I voice it from time
to time----but I personally think it's foolish to deride it as being as useless
as you guys are making it out to be.

              Madonna.

She hasn't made a decent song in 20 years.
I've heard her live, and it was awful. She can't carry a tune in a bucket.
All she does is try to "shock" people, as if frenchkissing a woman is so ground-breaking. Hell, I do that all the time....
Guy Richie made decent movies before he married her. Hooray for the divorce!

And she's ugly, too. Just look at that video in which she prances around her bony *** in a leotard. Go into a retirement home, woman...

And how unlucky do I get?
I once won a ticket with backstage pass to a concert of hers, as first prize in a contest.
I traded it in for the third prize....

Did you ever notice Madonna's voice changed within the last 20 years ?

Her voice used to sound like a chipmunk (Like a Virgin)

Today, she has a much deeper voice.

I think in the old days her voice was studio altered .. perhaps sped up to make her sound younger... I dunno

I can't believe someone ran down Motown.

                  Tina Turner is great.

Genesis were fantastic in the 70's, hit and miss since.

If you want hugely popular but total crap try High School Musical.

Kiss gets points for the spectacle, but I honestly never considered them a good band musically. They were like garage band with a gimmick.

Madonna is probably THE most over-rated artist in the history of music. I agree with everything Gorn Captain said.

Brittney Spears isn't really known for her music much, but when she was, she wasn't all that great. There were 20 other teen queens at the time who could out-sing and perform her. She's not classic though...and hopefully never will be.

I'll throw in an odd one here. Roy Clark. Yes, the host of Hee-Haw. Roy is a famous guitarist, but in my estimation couldn't hold the pick of Merle Travis, Chet Atkins or Jerry Reed. All speed and flash and no substance.

Okay...here's my post above in a more simplified form....

QUERY: Garage bands don't deserve high praise?

                      I don't buy that for a second...
but---maybe someone has a logical answer for why this may be true?

                        She did.

                        John Lennon did too BTW.

I'm not really a country guy, but if I had to pick an over-rated classic country list ... it would be .. (note -- this is CLASSIC country)

                          1. Porter Wagoner -- what did he actually do besides having a flashy suit and hosting a short lived show ?

                          2. George Jones -- I like George ... I like him because he's a funny drunk hillbilly -- but that's about it.

                          3. Johnny Cash ... yes, I said Johnny Cash .... I love the guy, but he is over-rated ... Young rock kids say he influenced them (but they don't own any of his records) ... They only like him because he was mysterious and "cool"

                          4. Hank Jr ...... I like Hank Jr ... But I think a lot of people like him because it's cool to like him (see Johnny Cash)

                          5. Dolly Parton ... Her boobs made her famous ... simple as that.

I liked Motown when I was in my early teens.

After that, 99% of Motown muzik gives me a headache.

I can still listen to Spector music though
