Today we have more outlets and forms of entertainment.

    Different world, different times.

    Technology has changed all that.

^ agreed, it's about the @sses in the seats. Also, whatsup with the insanity of what it takes to make a movie these days? 400 million to make WWZ? And a computer does most of the work.
WOW. I had no idea it cost THAT much. I heard "troubled production" but this is beyond troubled. No way that movie is making that much money back. It did decent business this weekend, but someone is going to lose their rear on this one.

What you're talking about is the after market though. Demand is demand. Whether it's 1931, 1975, or 2013. Films stay as long as business is good. If MOS is already emptying theaters after only a couple of weeks, that is hardly an argument to suggest it's somehow more popular because of the times. Do you know what the longest theatrical run is for a film? 38 years and counting... YES. The Rocky Horror Picture Show has never been pulled completely from theaters since it's 1975 release. How would you like to have a royalty check on that puppy? So there's a film that open long before Superman the movie and is still running today.

I do think the adjusted inflation charts are relevant, but it's not the whole story, either.

I know some are waiting to watch Man of Steel at home, and they will be able to do that by Christmas if not Halloween.

If they had to wait two or three years to see it on HBO or four years to see a cut version on Broadcast TV, more people might make it out to the theater.

It's hard to quantify but fun to argue.

The same small core of weirdos keep seeing that movie over and over again at 25 cents a pop, lol.

I think it's all about throwing food at the screen. We need to take a bag of tomatoes and some Cabo and go to a showing. That screen would never be the same.

Adjusted for inflation is a great way to check grosses, but as Hector said the marketplace is drastically different. Since the advent of TV, everything has changed: first TV, then cable, then home video and games, and home theatre systems. Not to mention all the other entertainment choices that have come about.

The best way to gauge a movie's success is by its grosses compared to its' contemporary movies. A blockbuster stands above the others. For me, you can name them pretty
easily: Gone With the Wind, Snow White, The Sound of Music, The Exorcist, Jaws, Star Wars, Raiders, ET, Jurassic Park, Titanic, Avatar, The Dark Knight, The Avengers. The movies everyone watched in that era.

But there are no scenes IN RHPS that would warrant the tossing of either tomatoes or Cabo. Besides, who would want to waste perfectly exquisite Cabo by pitching it at a movie screen???
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

I think he meant drink Cabo and throw tomatoes, I'm 100% he meant that, lol.
