I'm thinking that that trailer was the opposite of "lazy".
My opinion is that "lazy" would be what you yourself just described, as in: just giving the audience a slam, bam, action-superhero movie trailer to satiate their Hollywood-drone need to see all the money shots in a trailer.
Instead this one attempted to go for your deeper emotions.
As mentioned earlier, I think Costner's one line alone helped them to succeed with what I just described that I believe they were going for.
