Apparently Warner Bros. are so rattled by their investment to Man of Steel that they won't move forward with the Justice League until they see what this film does. An awkward statement to make publicly and even more odd when you consider they are NOT running a trailer during the Superbowl, which is the most watched event around the world. Even Iron Man 3, Lone Ranger, and Star Trek are getting trailers in the Superbowl. But a film Warner Bros says has to deliver big returns doesn't? That reeks of no confidence. Look at Marvel's build to the Avengers? Captain America was a very modest hit, as was Thor. The Hulk didn't even make any money, which really only left Iron Man to be the big hit of the four. But all of these films were building a narrative towards the pay off in the Avengers and pay off it did. Here we have Warner Bros already shaking in their boots on their first outing. Doesn't sound like a creative team with a plan. Sounds more like a bunch of executive stuffed shirts who don't like the genre who need a big pay day to do anything with the license. Superman Returns grossed over $200 million domestically which was more than three of the four Marvel films. Does Warner Bros honestly expect Dark Knight money on ANOTHER reboot of Superman? Unrealistic expectations to say the least.

This is exactly why I dislike Super-Hero movies. Too much is changed, directors needing to put thier finger prints on thing as if they invented the character. Case in point, Goblin, Blade, Fury, Hawkeye, newest Spidey, Lizard, Electro, Thor, Batman and now Superman. All of these iconic comic characters whom have exsisted for decades in the mags have been changed dramaticly for the big screen. WHY? I want to see these guys look like they did in the comic book or I will stay home.Last edited by HumanWolfman; Jan 30, '13, 8:21 AM.View My Customs

Last year, WB didn't run a DKR trailer during the Super Bowl, partially due to the nature of the early ads showing the destruction of the football field. Not showing a MoS trailer is pretty stupid. It's pretty much a checklist for the general public to go "Okay, I need to see that, that and that."
I hope we don't have another John Carter marketing mishap formulating. Speaking of which, Geek Shall Inherit mentions a book on that very subject. I think I'm going to have to read this...

EXACTLY. I think what it comes down to is Warner Bros. doesn't act like they know what they want to do. Marvel Studios had a very precise layout of how these films were going to apply to one another. When you watched them, you understood they were connected and looking back now you can see how cohesive that narrative was. I'm just as confident Marvel has already scripted out everything for Iron Man 3, Cap 2, Thor 2, Guardians, to lead into Avengers 2 as well. They know what they're doing, have confidence in the process, and understand the key story elements to each of these characters. They know their product, but more importantly they believe in it. No one panicked when Capt America only grossed $176 million. No one panicked when Thor only did modestly better at $181 million. But Marvel Studios saw the endgame. They saw what they believed would be the pay off with the Avengers and people were blown away. Now they have the momentum and the experience from those films to go another round. They built their fan base and succeeded all because they had FAITH in what they were doing. Warner Bros. is whining before the first screen has shown Man of Steel. They want to duplicate Marvel's success, but they don't have any faith in their product because they don't understand it enough to believe in the process of just telling the stories. They want big money early and often. I think that's unrealistic and unfortunate. I doubt we'll ever see the Justice League as a result. Marvel's success was not built overnight. It took time, patience, and a steady hand at emphasizing good stories over esthetics. Warner Bros' doesn't want to pay the bill on that experience.

^That kind of thinking trickles down to DC itself, with it's knee-jerk rebooting into the new 52, and constant creative reshuffling. It's obvious they are desperate to get product out that grabs people, are aren't willing to have confidence in their product. If it doesn't click instantly, they wipe the board clean and try something new.

Superman Returns didn't get a Super Bowl trailer either. I bet Gi Joe gets in there somewhere. If incompetence were a punishable crime, WB would have been sent to ride the lightning on old sparky a long time ago. Man of Steel will do Captain ameica numbers, no better. Write it down. What should be a 400-500 mil picture will barely scrape 200.I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

The fact that Warner Bros. apparently didn't have confidence in the film and the box office sorta reflects that. I enjoyed the GL movie too when I saw it in the theater but WB very quickly backed-off the idea of a sequel as soon as they started to see how the movie got squashed at the box office. "Green Lantern" was supposed to be the tent pole of a new Justice League franchise series of movies and we see how that has turned out. Now they're placing their bets...hesitantly... on "Man of Steel" to do the same.Think OUTSIDE the Box! For the BEST in Repro & Custom Packaging!Comment

Really? Last I heard, they were making the GL2 script 'darker' and 'edgier.' I didn't realize it had been canceled. That's too bad, as I would love a sequel to GL.The fact that Warner Bros. apparently didn't have confidence in the film and the box office sorta reflects that. Anyway, back to Supes. From what I've seen, I don't have a problem with any of the changes (though I will have a problem if they're really making Jimmy, Jenny Olsen). The suit seems to be more alien-ish then past versions, but I get why they did that. It kinda works better like that, imo. I can't remember what else people were sorta complaining about, but nothing seemed that off to me. I'll see it in the theater and I'm sure I will enjoy it.
Besides, we could be (and probably are) commenting on stuff taken out of context (like the Pa Kent comment). The only way to know if our complaints are legitimate, is when we actually see it.
Then, if they are, we can really go nuts and boycott everything related to DC.

They already have plans for Phase 3 as well.

I just dont understand WB's way of thinking (really this goes for many superhero flicks), why make so many drastic changes?
Superman has decades upon decades of material to draw from and instead of all these needless reboots just make one good story after another using the best of what was written over the decades. It's worked for James Bond, I dont know why it cant work with the oldest superhero of them all.
When people who have been fans of these characters for decades start to shrug over their films, theres something seriously wrong. I feel like I should be excited about every new installment.Comment

A few missteps here with WB, Snyder and Nolan.
1. The unnecessary re-telling of Superman's origin. This will likely take up at least an hour or more to get him from a Kryptonian womb, into a spaceship, to a Kansas field to Smallville, to, apparently, a fishing boat?, underwater meditation facility and then Metropolis. He will go until the last half hour of the film to get into the suit.
2. The suit, while obviously alien in origin, is not needed. I gotta ask where the suit even came from? Was it packed in the spaceship sent to earth? Was Jor-El a tailor and a prophet who knew exactly what size he'd need? If anything, the suit needed to be an amalgamation of Kryptonian symbolism and Earth textiles. A half and half mix would have worked well. If part of the conflict in the film is the fact he's scaring the Sh*t out us because he's an alien, maybe wear a less alien-like space suit.
3. To have a character who has never, in 70 plus years, questioned right or wrong or had to recallibrate his moral compass, suddenly be unsure of himself? Both the writer and director have said they are trying to make a contemporary Superman. The reason Superman works to this day is he's timeless, he makes sense and inspires for every generation. There is no reason or need to update.
4. Marketing has been abysmal so far. The release was pushed back an extra seven months for a reason. Either it was to work on the film more and make it better or it was to cover up flaws. Either way, they need to push this thing NOW. They simply cannot wait till May before putting on a few commercials while American Idol is on. There are few characters everyone on the planet knows. Just after Ronald McDonald is Superman. Dear God, it shouldn't be hard to promote Superman and it shouldn't be a struggle to get the general public. let alone comic geeks, excited. Epic, monumental failure on every level.I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

Warner's backed the date up on Man of Steel's release in pre-production when Green Lantern tanked and Peter Jackson needed more time for the Hobbit.
When GL underperformed, The Flash film that was planned for this coming summer never went past the script level and GL2, which was tenuously slotted for Dec 2013, or maybe vice versa, was held/scrapped, too.
Man of Steel was moved from Dec 2012 to Summer 2013 to fill the hole left by the loss of Flash/GL2. Jackson needing more time for the Hobbit gave Warners a tent pole for Dec 2012 to replace the loss of Man of Steel for last Christmas season.
When Diane Neilson took over DC Entertainment, the idea was to have a summer and a Christmas DC film each year starting with Dark Knigth Returns, but Green Lantern's underperformance caused Warner's to loose faith in the characters and Johns, whose role as chief creative officer was akin to Kevin Feige's role with Marvel at the time. He was a co-producer on GL, gave notes on the script and was set to the same for the Flash and eventually Captain Marvel.
Had GL been a hit, The idea was for Johns to shepherd a slew of DC films into theaters to take up the vacuum left by the Harry Potter films. That plan sank right after leaving port with GL.
If Man of Steel works well at the box office, don't be surprised if David Goyer doesn't end up being Warner's go-to guy for guiding DC products to the screen.
What I hate is that I don't want to embrace all the changes Man of Steel seems to be making to the Superman myths, but if the film flops it will basically doom JLA and likely any other DC super hero property other than Batman getting a shot on the silver screen.
It is surprising Warners isn't using the SuperBowl as a vehicle to push the Man of Steel. Could it possibly do something for the Academy Awards?
The First MOS trailer was well received from what I read and experienced. No one laughed inappropriately at it in the theater like they did at the first GL trailer, at least.
The GL film had a ton of problems. The tone was all over the place. It couldn't decide if it wanted to be fun or dark. ultimately, I thought it was too dark.
I'm afraid the same might happen with MOS. There should be danger and high stakes in a Superman film, but it shouldn't be all somber and dark and confused. That's not Superman. He's all about inspiration and hope and clarity of purpose.
Maybe that will be the outcome of the film. By defeating Zod and his cohorts, the character may go from being an alien who inspires fear to one who inspires hope. If that's the case along with a great deal of action, maybe the film will work.Last edited by madmarva; Jan 31, '13, 8:54 AM.Comment

Did the Harry Potter movies have Super Bowl commercials? Maybe Warner's just doesn't buy ads in conjunction with the event if it didn't do so for DKR, Superman Returns and GL.
Warners had a lot of faith in GL, until the early reviews ravaged it. Those reviews weren't unfair, though. They were dead on, IMO.Comment
