Also - the flying scenes look like they were filmed using Instagram.

I think Lois and Clark had more "heart" in their pinkie finger than this movie has in it's whole body.

Superman should not be taken serious -- It should be "fun"

This movie will bomb because most Superman fan will eventually open their eyes and see it for what it is --- Another Batman movie

No it will not...it will be a blockbuster...I'll bet avatars and siggy...one month duration.

You win, you pick an avatar and a siggy for me to use for one month...and viceversa.

I will easily win this bet, lol.

I just hope the kids enjoy it and like us, want to BE Superman. Thinking about the Dark Knight Trilogy, to me there was no play value to it and that's what I'm afraid of will happen with this film. I hope I'm totally wrong but I don't know. But like others have said, I want some "fun" fro a Superman movie, TV show, comic book etc...

              Oh yeah Hec, SMALLVILLE!

I think it is a little premature to judge this movie's interpretation of the character. The trailer doesn't give us enough to go on.

But I will say this... in my opinion, the foundation of the Superman story is role as an outsider. He is from another planet. He is surrounded by people who are his inferiors. And those people would hate and fear him if they only knew his secret. But despite all that... despite having every reason to hold that all against us... he sees the good in our humanity. He chooses to embrace it, and in doing so, goes on to become the living embodiment of our noblest human ideals. There is something a little dark in that origin, but there is also something really inspiring. I don't think the one precludes the other... done right, I think the elements of darkness really serve to ground Supes' optimism and ideals.

"Superman: The Movie" came out in an era where we had Watergate, a growing distrust of our institutions, economic strife, a pop culture that has grown more course and nihilistic. Sound familiar?

The movie made us believe in the Superman, the intergalactic and very powerful Boy Scout who loves humanity and good and people responded to it. It also helped that Superman was treated like the Americana it is.

I don't know, this movie looks like they are going to make him into the same brooding reluctant hero that seems standard issue today. I think people would respond to the unironic Boy Scout Superman if given half a chance.

You're right - of course. I can't judge the whole movie or the character of Superman in this movie from it's trailer. It's just that the impression the trailer has given me seems more like what's been going on in other recent superhero movies that I'm not so crazy about.

Your description of Superman's character is exactly correct! I do think the first 2 Superman movies addressed that - and did it just enough to ground him (as you say) and make him sympathetic. I think step too far and he's a brooding whiner though. We want to sympathize with Supes - but we shouldn't find him pitiful. It just goes against the whole Super thing.

"Superman Returns" stepped way over that line to me. In that movie it didn't seem like he was trying to live up to his heroic ideals - it seemed like he was reluctantly saving people because his powers obligated him to. He didn't seem to be embracing humanity's good - he just seemed to be dealing with limited options.

I do hope the movie is a lot more like how you see the character. I also hope it's not two and a half hours of over-the-top melodrama. Dude can friggin' fly and punch holes in tanks - he's also suppose to be fun dammit! I want to see kids leaving the theatre pretending to whizz through the air - not signing up for therapy.

I agree. I think there's always some room for fantasy. If they've taken that fantasy out of Superman they've made a huge mistake. I mean, if Superman isn't allowed to be fantastic then what's the point of him?

                            the music was godawful
They could have done without the church choir music

I'm pretty sure that was a temp track in the trailer, using music from the movie Gladiator.

The final score probably isn't even finished yet.

That absolutely nails it. Superman the movie remains such a staple because both director Richard Donnor and actor Christopher Reeves brought this rich innocence to the character that permitted him to look for the good will in people beyond the politics of social and cultural divides. Yes, Superman is an orphan, but his circumstances are deemed the result of natural causes to his planet and not something more sinister. My fear, from what I'm hearing, is there will be more back story to the destruction of Krypton. I don't want Superman turning into a Batman-like figure where he has to "avenge" a wrong that orphaned him. If that happens, it basically derails his origin and his motivations to become Superman and parks him almost parallel with Batman. Too close and too dark.

And one final note. Nolan apparently has got the rumor mill ablaze with the suggestion that Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Robin character from DKR may indeed be the Batman Superman meets at the end of Man of Steel. I'll be the first to say it. Clearly I LOVE the Dark Knight series. But in my mind, it's a stand alone premise. I don't want any part of that concept colliding with the Justice League world. Now is the time to reboot him and give him a comic book flavor which best serves the interests of the Justice League. Let's hope Warner Bros. has enough sense to leave this alone. Here's the story on that.

I agree with you - but now that Avengers has made boatloads of money I can't imagine that DC isn't going to try the same thing.
