^I think most Superman fans will give it a shot. I can't imagine too many staying away. They did make changes, but Donner's Krypton was a radical departure from any previous version, and Luthor was a buffonish real-estate swindler instead of a mad scientist.

HUGE Supes fan here, and I don't mind the changes, I just think of it as an alternate universe, just like the new Star Trek movie, which you yourself, after months and months of hating it, finally saw it, and liked it, lol.

So pipe it down for once, Captain Bringdown, lol.

If there was no opposing views this would make for a very boring thread

I'm ok with all of it but for the Pa Kent sounding like he wants him to not use his powers. I much like the " you are here for a reason" type of character ; however, I know this is a trailer, so that one bit could be out of context. Let's see how the movie really is before saying it is good or bad.
              It's all good!

One of the guys at Superman Homepage had this to say about the Pa Kent controversy:

                He Said What?

Then we move into what could quite possibly be the most controversial moment of the trailer. Jonathan Kent tells his son he has to keep his powers a secret. Clark asks his father if he should have just let those people die. There is a pause and we hear Jonathan say, "Maybe."

As I watched the trailer on my iPhone (I was at work and couldn't wait the eight hours until I got home to finally see it) I said both aloud and to no one, "Man, people are going to wig out about that."

And lo it came to pass that people did indeed wig out about that.

Trailer I didn't, which surprised the heck out of me. The Mike of two years ago would be having a fit right now. The Mike of today (the one writing this review) is a little calmer and more level headed about the whole thing. Some of this comes from just chilling the heck out. Ultimately the thing that kept me from flying off the handle was the realization that this a new way of looking at Superman. I know that can be a little jarring to some people but no more so than to those that grew up watching the George Reeves series in the fifties going to the cinema to see SUPERMAN II and watching Superman and Lois get busy in the Fortress of Solitude. If you look at the history of Jonathan Kent as presented in film and television there is a historical precedence of him being a giver of sage like wisdom and that is a totally valid way of dealing with the character. The Jonathan in SMALLVILLE was a different animal. Sure he was one of the factors that led to that version of Clark becoming a hero but he was also a nervous wreck about people finding out what his son could do.

I have a feeling that that the Jonathan we are going to see in this movie is a natural evolution of that. What if this Jonathan is so afraid of people fearing his son that he tells that son to hide what he can do? Does that make this Jonathan a bad father? Or does it recast him as a man that is in an impossible situation dealing with if the best way he can? Yes it is nice to think of Jonathan as this bastion of fatherhood that says all the right things and does all of the right thing shortly before he assumes room temperature. However, if you are going to shake things up how about you make him a man that loves his adoptive son so much that as a father he will do everything he can to keep the son safe and protected. If it comes down to people dying so his son;s freedom won't be jeopardized well... that's a shame but it might be worth it in the end. It doesn't make Jonathan a bad man or a bad father. It makes him human.

It is also important to keep in mind the bit of dialogue Jonathan delivers later in the trailer where he tells Clark that he is going to have decide what kind of man he is going to be. That strikes me as someone telling his son that it is his decision on how to use his abilities or maybe even not use them. Between that and just being a good man I can still see a Jonathan Kent that replies, "Maybe," when his son asks him if he should have just let those people die.
I tend to agree with him here.

That's what bothers me about this movie...the producers are feeling the need to change things for the sake of change...

                      "Let's change Superman's suit...Let's change Perry White's race...Let's change Jimmy Olsen's gender"

                      Great Krypton!

The change of Superman's pal to a woman changes the whole dynamic. Those are the type of changes i do not care for. I would rather they just create a new character rather than change one that has such history behind it.

As Superman Homepage pointed out a few days ago, IMDB is not exactly known for its accuracy on new projects. So take this with a grain of salt for now...

                            Hmmmm....

I dunno; this one sounds on the line for me: it's got some weird tamperings, but it'll be impossible to tell how drastic it plays out without seeing the film. The Pa Kent part is a good example. Other stuff:

                            >Let's change Superman's suit

That always bothers me because there's no real need for it; other than busing it up so's it doesn't look old fashioned effects-wise compard to newer, overwrought designs preferred by the current nerdly arts. It's not a big deal, but it still makes me wince every time they do it.

"Would you prefer yellow spandex?" Yes, yes I would; especially since decades of cosplayers have shown that you CAN do fantastic, comic accurate outfits.

                            >Let's change Perry White's race

This one doesn't bother me so much. (Other than the possible irony of the name....) Perry's race has never been an important part of his character, for historical accuracy we're in a era where enough time has passed between now and the time a non-white guy coul hold such a position that he doesn't seem anachronistic, and the character came about during an era where you didn't see a lot of non-white folks in entertainment. Mixing it up ethnicly more accurately reflects how a place like Metropolis would shake out these days.

                            >Let's change Jimmy Olsen's gender

THAT'S a weird one. (Doesn't that make him Lana Lang now?) I could see them wanting to add more female charcetrs to the cast (as opposed to Lois, redhead Lois and Blonde female Superman) but it does make things somewhat awkward. (Check out some of them silver age covers, but make Jimmy female. WAY different effect in some cases.)

David S. Goyer (screenplay & story for The Man of Steel) has this to say about the movie:

"We're approaching Superman as if it weren't a comic book movie as if it were real.... I adore the Donner films. Absolutely adore them. It just struck me that there was an idealist quality to them that may or may not work with today's audience. It just struck me that if Superman really existed in the world, first of all this story would be a story about first contact. He's an alien. You can easily imagine a scenario in which we'd be doing a film like E.T., as opposed to him running around in tights. If the world found out he existed, it would be the biggest thing that ever happened in human history."
