For all of it’s perceived faults that we as “traditional” Spider-Man fans will point to, I have little doubt this movie will make money hand over fist. It is still Spider-Man, albeit an altered take and it still boasts two of the hottest up and coming stars in Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. (Not to mention a tremendous talent in Dennis Leary who will chew on scenes himself) I also feel the “Twilight” comparisons are a reach.

The costume likely should have been left alone but they didn’t stray too far, and the eyes on the mask look much better than they did on the Raimi suit.

Spider-Man, Batman, and Superman are characters that will endure time much like Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood and others. And with that they will (and must) be re-invented again and again.

This is a perfect example of that aspect.

OK. I know there are those of you out on the boards who are more than willing to say "We'll give this movie the benefit of the doubt until we see it", but the MORE I see of it, the less of a benefit of a doubt I'm willing to give it!!! I just saw some shots that were in EMPIRE magazine posted over on Cosmic Book News from TAS-M and all I can say is: MEH. The shot, I think, that disturbs the me the most (and by disturbs, I guess I should say perturbs) is the profile shot of Spidey and a thug (Uncle Ben's killer[?]). He face is way too flat. I know this may sound nitpicky, but Spidey has always had a very pronounced profile, no matter what his incarnation. In the Raimi movies, they accomplished this with a shell inside the mask. I have no idea what's going on with this take.

Plus, I STILL hate the lack of a true "web" pattern on the mask (it's more a series of geometric, intersecting lines) and, as a huge fan of the Romita-era Spidey, I HATE the way the new eyes on the mask look!! For one thing, they are waaaaay to small and why the heck are they gold? I'm sure they'll explain this away in the movie as the lenses being polarized so Spidey doesn't get blinded by the sun whilst swinging around [or by any sparkly vampires he may encounter since he appears to be in a very Twilighty world---sorry, couldn't resist].

The more I see of this incarnation of Spider-Man, the more he's starting to look like the manga or Japanese version of a live action Spider-Man and, while that may be cool to the people of Japan, it ain't so cool to me...

And, if the cover of EMPIRE is any indication, it looks like this incarnation of Spider-Man isn't going to spend any more time under the mask than his predecessor did, taking it off for any reason, just so we can see the star's face underneath. I think if an actor signs on to play Spider-Man, they need to come to an understanding that, when they're in the costume, the mask needs to stay on as much as possible. From the looks of the recent AVENGERS posters and photos I've been seeing, it looks like Cap and Iron Man spend a good portion of the show without their masks and helmets, too.

I dunno, maybe I'm just too damn picky....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but if memory serves me properly, it's long been established in the funny books that Parker's parents were actually SHIELD agents, so unless they're going to cross this universe over with the other MU (the one inhabited by IRON MAN, THOR, etc.), then they're going to have to *******ize that part of the story by having them work for someone else (either someone or some entity connected to OsCorp or some government agency like the CIA, FBI, etc.) Either way, my feelings towards it are totally meh.
It's based on Ultimate Spiderman, and in my opinion, their storyline there is much more tighter and makes much more sense in the greater arc of Peter Parker as a scientist within the web of government/corporate conspiracy than dragging in the Red Skull and the rest of the Marvel U into an awkward mix.

Essentially the entire subtext of Spidey's greatest villains are the fact that they are surrogate father figures he needs to outgrow in order to become his own man. Lizard, Doc Ock and Green Goblin all fit this model. There is some really interesting stuff in Ultimate Spiderman, although not perfect, involving the Perversions of Richard Parker's scientific work, and makes the evil doppleganger aspect of Venom that much more personal than the alien from outer space.

Although it does dovetail so much better into SHIELD and the Nick Fury relationship in the Ultimates Universe because there was an overarching plan, not because it was a fun twist they thought up one day that had no real endgame in mind. Lest we forget them showing up in the Clone Saga to make a convoluted mess even messier. Which again, is why the clone saga in Ultimate Spiderman actually ended up working so much better than the scattershot approach, when you have a planned storyline and personal character driven moments driving the big plot line rather than a series of marketing driven sales gimmicks.

It's Marvel's version of the "six degrees of separation." Is it any wonder Kevin Bacon has now joined in these films? Or were the heavens and earth all built by Shield and Nick Fury in seven days? I'm bored to tears with this endless arc of connection between all of these Marvel heroes and FREAKIN' Shield! It's not only boring, but completely unoriginal. It's like Marvel is trying to make their heroes into GI Joe for Christ's sake. Who has the Kung Fu grip? Nothing is that neat in the world and nothing reeks more of bad writing than explaining it all away by saying someone was behind all of this. Well...I take that back. I guess there is "something" behind all this...TOYS!

^^^... I was actually editing as I typed... But I think that about sums it up. Tying everyone together takes away any real individuality they all deserve to have.

LOL! That's a bit too nit picky my friend. I've hated the fact that artist draw his eyes so friggin big.

I"m one that love the smaller eyes. I think it was artist publisher Greg Theakston who pointed out to me when we were looking at the cover of Amazing Fantasy #15. He said wipe away all your ideas of Spiderman and what you know....and pretend this is the first time you're looking at the cover and what do you see.

I said Knowing the marvel line of comics at the time The Spider-Man looked like one of Kirby's aliens or Monsters books creatures not a teen with problems.

He said exactly the eyes that Kirby and Ditko drew made him look creepy Romita drew spiderman very handsome even with the mask on but kept the eyes right.....

I like the look it is what it is....the story and action still has to sell me.....cause that third spiderman movie left a bad taste in my mouth......

I like Ditko's eyes. As he went along, he developed the black part as fairly large, but the lens was smaller. McFarlane made them HUGE, and everyone else was told to follow, even Romita Sr!!!

Also as the book progressed the blacks were removed from the costume for more color and he added more bulk to Spidey's body.....

I have a love hate thing about McFarlane.......he did some great layouts but his anatomy was not to be desired and over inked the **** out of everything and his Mary Jane was Fooking Ugly as all ****.....

I'll Take Romita sr. Mary Jane anyday..........

I was NOT a fan of the GINORMOUS McFarlane eyes, either. They would be far too impractical as far as any type of protection goes. I like the Romita, Sr/Gil Kane eyes and the Ditko eyes. Unfortunately, the eyes on the new mask look like neither...

How are all these interconnected avenger's movies not be a fanboy's dream for us? They ave always tried to tie stuff together even back in Stan and Jack's day. The movies are just doing it much less haphazardly. I mean it makes much more sense for them to go into Iron Man, Captain America, ?hulk and Thor with a planned tie in movie rather than just writing "and they all just happen to run into each other" on the first page of the Avengers script. If fury and SHEILD are the obvious tie in device, I can't see it being a bad thing. They have all been great movies thus far that stand on their own, but in the same way that The Marvel comics we grew up with as kids gets slightly mre awesome when we Are in the know about the way they crossover and te into each other.

Kevin Bacon was a terrific sebastion shaw!

And honestly if folks aren't reading SHIELD, they are missing out a fun book. It's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in the Marvel Universe. Sure it reveals SHIELD Is pretty much behind everything in the history of the Marvel U, but then how else to you get awesome fun scenes of Imo Tep fighting the brood as the Captain America of ancient egypt or Galileo fighting Galactus?

And who doesn't love Easter eggs like the original Moon Knight and the x-men villain Apocolyse stuck in there?
