The thing I remember most about Batman89 was walking out of the theater and feeling sooooooo let down. The script was so weak...but Micheal Keaton was what totally ruined the movie for me. If you want the Audience to "suspend disbelief"...you have to give them something to work with. I shouldn't be able to look at Batman(Keaton)and know that I could beat the DOG CRAP out of him. At no time did I find him believable as Batman.

Jack Nicholson was the ONLY redeeming quality that movie had.

I always thought Nicholson was a little too old to play the Joker (even in '89)

Yes, Romero was old too, but if Burton wanted to really distance himself from the series he should have went for a younger joker.

I checked on Amazon yesterday and there's two-fer DVDs with both these movies. I'm planning on buying one to watch soon..

LOVE the TAS series, especially the first year. Very, very stylish.

I've been a Batman fan since the 70s. In one way of the other, i've appreciated every adaption of the character to the big and small screen. Obviously some more than others, but to me the best by far is the Timm Animated Series. Timm, Dini and all the other people who worked on the series mined the best of the comics, TV shows and movies for what to me is really the definitive version of the character. They got Batman better than the people at DC got Batman and far better than any of the movie adaptions.

I'll always love the 66 Batman series/ film, and the 89 Batman movie and the hype and scene surrounding the film was wonderful at the time and still holds up to a degree today. I think Nolan's done a great job of adapting Batman and finding a way to put a realistic as possible version on the screen for the time being.

But if I'm really in the mood to watch the essence of Batman, to me, there's nothing like Timm's animated version and Mask of the Phantasm to me is still the best Batman movie.

That's just one Batman fan's opinion, and viva la difference.

I liked Batman Forever because of Jim Carry

I think Carry was a good choice for Riddler.

The only better Riddler (back then) would have been Robin Williams

Since we're sort of on a tangent here regarding the different takes on The Joker, my question to you all is this: Would Heath Ledger's [who, when it was announced he was playing The Joker, created all kinds of controversy amongst comics afficianados), be nearly as "revered" if Ledger hadn't offed himself? I mean, don't get me wrong, I liked his villain okay and, yes, he was properly psychotic and realistically so, but was he THE Joker? NIMHO....

I think, in order of preferences, my Joker's would have to be:

Caesar Romero - Maybe he wasn't as homicidal as the current Joker is, but he nailed the Joker's persona to the wall.

Jaaaaack - He DID nail the Joker's theatricality and homicidal tendicies all in one fell swoop. Plus, he was charismatic and uttered the immortal line "This town needs an enema!"

Mark Hammill - Captures ALL the charactistics of The Joker in just his voice! Who'd've guessed it from a Jedi Knight...?

Heath Ledger - Again, a good psychopath, but not really a Joker-y psychopath.
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

No, He wouldn't have Won the Academy Award. That was the Academy basically honoring a talented actor with the award....had Nicholson died when he did the Joker he would have won also......

Romero- an Amazing actor could have easily Been the greatest version of the joker because he was an outstanding actor in his day.

Nicholson- Fun and dark the scene with the fried Dead guy is The Joker!!

Hammill- When i read the Joker this is the voice i hear....nailed it perfectly

Ledger- an outstanding actor who played a crackhead with clown makeup on....would have made a great horror character in another movie but it ain't the Joker...Brandon Lee was a better Joker in the crow....

In my opinion, I don't think so.

I remember when it happened. His death brought out the absolute worst in a lot of people online. There were groups of people that built him and his portrayal of the Joker up to some type of morbid almost mythical pseudo religious state. I found it creepy and cult like. Twisted idol worship taken to the ugliest lunatic extreme. It made my skin crawl. I avoided the movie for a long time because of it. I still cannot stand the "Why so serious?" meme.

He was a good actor and played a believable psychopath in The Dark Knight. The character was a psychopath in dirty smeared clown make up. It worked in context of the "Nolenverse" but the character wasn't the Joker to me. Again, he was a good actor and good in the part in context of the "Nolenverse." But without the tragedy of his death I don't think his portrayal would be built up to this near mythical state.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

                            Agreed x 4..

I wasn't impressed with Ledger at all. He played a very convincing psychotic villain, and it was interesting figuring out how the 'wheels' worked in his head for his justifications, but he was no Joker.

I'm not just talking a lack of flamboyance here; I'm talking style, methods, poise. Ledger portrayed Joker not as some 'master villain' that we know and admire, but as a conniving street thug. Which is fine if that's the artistic license film-makers wish to take style-wise, but it also limits the potential for a truely memorable villain. Essentially, I'm agreeing with Werewolf's rationale.

The Joker most of us know delights in being over-the-top when committing crimes and confounding Batman, which both Nicholson and Mark Hammill really do well.
                            Peace.. Through Superior Firepower.

I'd say typically, Actors DON'T win Academy Awards for Comic book movies. So no, he probably wouldn't have won had he not died.

That said, I feel he should have one the Academy Award either way...because he was absolutely MAGNIFICENT in the role! Heath totally owned the part like nobody ever will again!
