    Green Lantern Movie thoughts

    Cool show.

It's not great film making, but it is a fun adaptation. I am writing this as a major GL fan and a realist. Maybe those two don't usually cooincide, but there were good and bad aspects of this.

    1. This is an origin story, and those are sometimes painfully slow. Since the general public do not know much about GL, they had to lay this stuff out pretty thick, and it still didn't cover all that's required to fully be engrossed.

    2. Ryan Reynolds nails this role. Hal Jordan is a smarmy, arrogant, selfish jackwad as witten by Geoff Johns since Rebirth. I had my doubts about his ability to be heroic, but he really surprised me. I do like him in other roles and films, I just didn't think he'd be right for GL. I was wrong. This really worked well.

    3. As mentioned by BK, the cgi suits are awsome. They flow well with each character and really come to life. I also had my doubt about this, but the pics absolutely do not do this any justice.

    4. Sinestro is such a freakin badass in a small role. Every second he is on screen he makes the most of it. He is a HUGE presence. I wish they would have had more interaction between he and Hal, but it works as is. In a limited capacity, Mark Strong really makes Sinestro one of the strongest comic movie characters EVER.

    5. The Hector Hammond stuff was okay. I can see how some thought it was a speed bump, but it did serve a purpose. I think a different actor might have made it a little more interesting. They could have juxtaposed some Earth stuff for space/lantern stuff but it is what it is.

    6. The GL constructs were very, very well done. Not mind-blowing but still very strong stuff. "Really, a race track?"

    7. Seeing the GL Corp was fantastic. Lantern Stel, Tomar-Re, Hannu, Kilowog and many others make appearances. It was so cool to see full renderings of these characters and to see how each has a suit built specifically to their body type.

    8. John Stewart is listed in the credits but I don't remember seeing him at all, even for a second. Any idea where he was?

Just some random(duh) thoughts about the film. It could have been better, and I'm sure the sequel will be. For those on the fence, if you are a regular reader and fan of GL, go see this. I won't steer you wrong. If you are not a fan of the character or have limited knowledge, this may not be for you. I really liked this. I also geeked out on the mid-credits bonus scene. I knew it was coming, but it was still goosebumps.

Well Scott, I don't know what I can add to this...as you pretty much summed up my thoughts & feelings about the movie.

I will say that I hope it does well enough at the Box Office to warrant a sequel...because now it's all set up and everything is in place.

Well said, Origin stories especially to non comic book viewers takes a bit to set up.
remember Superman in the 78 version doesn't appear in costume until an hour Later. It's kinda hit or miss, I think they did a good job in GL setting everything up for a sequel.

This may be one of those movies where the second movie may be better than the first.
I liked it a lot......can't wait for more of them.

Pretty much. However, he does bring a little bit of mojo to this character, a little bit of an edge and swagger that most comic heroes are missing. As big of a Superman fan as I am, GL is way more real to me. Supes is the pinnacle of what humanity should strive to be, a nearly unrechable measuring stick. Hal Jordan is real. He's one of us. If I got super powers, I'd still be the sarcastic, cynical guy I am today. Heck, I'd probably be a super villain to be quite honest.

Green Lantern is a different kind of hero. He's already a grown adult with lots of personal problems and opportunities who is thrust into his situation. Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne grew into their respective roles. It's just a different take on a comic hero and is a great adaptation of the current run of GL comics. Whether that translates into a great film is yet to be determined. I liked it, many won't.

I dislike Ryan Reynolds...he just makes my skin crawl...lol.

I was never a big fan of GL either...I mean...I don't dislike the character or anything...but as a kid...I don't recall ever buying a GL comic book.

Having said that...I do love movies...and will definitely check out the flick this week...and I'll see it with an open mind...then I'll get back to you.

I really liked the movie too. I have always liked Green Lantern so I might be biased just a little.

I am not a Ryan Reynolds fan, (Blade 3, ugghhhhh), but he did a great job in this film when GL has to step up and take responsibility. I think tho, that the script-writers were too slow to have him get in the game. It's almost like The Last Starfighter. How much can you hold back the hero? There were maybe 2 early parts where it should have clicked that he "must" assume the mantle of GL. I think they milked it a bit. Not a major thing but it makes the film feel longer than it should feel. Tues. is 1/2 off all day shows. I think I will go see it again. This has been a great summer for Super Hero films. If Captain America is as good as it looks we might have the perfect summer.

                  So....

How accurate is this review? (Be advised, MAJOR spoilers and some harsh language):

Topless Robot Presents: The Best Scenes from the Green Lantern Movie - Topless Robot

Interesting point: almost none of the complaints have anything to do with comic continuity; it's all weird plot anomalies.

I'd been looking forward to the movie for a long while, and I approached it with an open mind, and ignoring all the unenlightened critics and their bad reviews.

On the whole, I enjoyed it. I liked the fact that they didn't really "water down" any of the Oa or the Guardians aspect, and kept the depiction of the Corps itself and the various GLs pretty accurate.
It's always important to me that these comic book movies at least try to stay as accurate to the source material as possible.

The movie suffered a little because of all the relationship stuff, but generally it was okay.

I hope there's a sequel where we see more of Hal in lots of epic off-world GL action.

I agree with alot that Scott said...
                      1. we definitely needed an origin story for Lantern because most people don't even know who he is. with that ya its gonna be slow but this helps the sequels be even better.
                      2. Did anybody else miss the scene after the credits where Sinestro put on the yellow lantern ring???

I absolutely loved the film. And that was going in as only a luke-warm Lantern fan. I always liked GL, but probably more for cosmetic appearance then any particular story. I always enjoyed Neal Adam's rendering of him and Green Arrow. What isn't to like from that era? But I never really connected with Hal Jordon in the comics. But here I did. I thought they flushed his character out nicely and gave him the motivation he needed to become a valid member of the Green Lantern Corps. I just fear the back lash from critics has doomed any chance for this film to be truly successful and so we will never see the kind of sequel that likely would have contained all of the bells and whistles people wanted in this one. Sinestro was done so well here, and would have been incredible in a sequel.

My hope is that the film really takes off on DVD. Batman Begins made good money, but not huge money. But once people saw it on DVD it created more steam behind Dark Knight. I know a lot of that film's buzz came from the tragic death of Ledger, but I also believe that people saw how good Nolan's version of Batman was and were looking forward to the story continuing.

I think on DVD more kids and adults, who were possibly scared off by the reviews and rotten tomatoes rathing, will see the film and appreciate it for the fun and cool concepts it provided and overlook some of the film's uneven qualities.

The Green lantern cartoon that's coming out in the fall or next year should also help th character's popularity. I hope Warners/DC gives the film the chance to build into a franchise by seeing the parts that worked this time around and maximizing them in the sequel.
