Green Lantern Movie thoughts

I was incommunicado since Sunday while on vacation, and was sad to see GL didn't do gangbusters at the box office. I think several things contributed to this:

1. The critics. They didn't get it, and since the general public was a little iffy on the concept, they bought into their take on it. GL isn't the greatest movie ever, but it delivers the goods on entertainment, and didn't deserve the bashing it got.

2. Super Hero overload. I firmly believe GL would have done Thor numbers or better had it came out first. After Thor and X-Men: First Class, GL was just "another" super hero movie, with no ties to previously well-liked franchises like Iron Man and the good X-Men movies. I think the bloom is finally off the rose with the super hero fad. Look for many in-development flicks to get shelved after this, unless Captain America REALLY rakes in the dough.

3. The Green Hornet. Now, I don't think this was a MAJOR contribution, but the two similar titles and super hero content confused folks too dense to know the difference between an insect and an illumination device.

I hope good word of mouth from fans helps GL maintain solid sleep hit numbers like Batman Begins did, and that good faith travels onto DVD as well. I REALLY want to see that sequel with Mark Strong's Sinestro tearing up the universe!

^^^^^ you know one a upon a time Hollywood knew how to reach out to their audiences when they had the Hollywood system in place.....

They catered to so many ages making films to make them money hit or miss.....that's why movie serials did so well in the 30's into the early 50's.

These days the numbers at the box office green light the sequels...where in the golden age of movies Green Lantern would have been given a chance to perform....Producers would have green lit a sequel in a heart beat unless the movie was a BIG bomb which this movie isn't ,especially with the tease in GL......

Aliens and Terminator are perfect example of good first movie but outstanding sequels....

Naaahhh can't be that... or maybe it is? I will say I didn't like every comic book movie. I do like the new xmen movie but the 1st 3 I thought were just ok. I liked most of them ok but only a few did I really like. Green Lantern is one of them that I really liked.

Yes of course, we were weaned on the genre......and we're punished by studios who expect the average joe schmo to like a genre that they never or had minimal interest in.....if these movies don't perform to high standards they're considered flops, which is not fair to the comic book audience who suffers because grandma didn't go see it.......

GL not having a sequel would be a shame........

Maybe if movies stopped being so freeking expensive more people would take a chance and see more movies ......paying 12-20 bucks for a movie is Highway robbery....

Oh - I'm not saying you guys are indiscriminate - but maybe this particular movie is really great if you're a comic fan, and not so enjoyable if you're not.

I'm interested to see how Transformers 3 does. Nothing in the trailers really makes it distinctive from the first two, and the second one left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths. The amped up sex in that one really turned me off and made it really uncomfortable in the theater for me with my young son.

I'm thinking there is going to be some serious apathy toward this one. If that's the case, maybe GL will be able to maintain a decent presence for a bit, but it's tough with blockbusters coming each week.

Maybe if movies stopped being so freeking expensive more people would take a chance and see more movies ......paying 12-20 bucks for a movie is Highway robbery....

you would think this would limit customers but for some reason people continue to pay it and so they will continue to charge it.

i am a grad student so i buy student ticks, and/or use matinee times. i skip the 3-D if more money. still to get a family of 5 in for the matinee with only one full price ticket -$31 plus a bag of popcorn and soda to share.

i also wait for DVD/netflix of almost all movies.

I love Transformers but I hate Micheal Bay's adaption. Especially the second one. I loved the first...10 minutes? When Prime drove out the back of an airplane and transformed on his way down. It was all downhill after that. What really bugs me is that they all look the same except Prime and Bumblebee. So much silver and tiny details make it impossible to know what you're looking at. I wont be seeing the third one until somebody I trust tells me its good.

Back to Green Lantern, I think Fathers Day and good weather were also factors working against it. People don't go to the movies when its nice out. (Well I'm sure it wasn't good weather everywhere in the world, but it was nice here and I know our numbers go down with sunny days)

Can you imagine if you didn't have that......it'd be pretty rough for a family of five.....
