Hey, Hec. Maybe they should have cast Tom Welling.

I can understand the dislike of Reynolds. I know many people who have a stigma regarding certain actors that will never change. Ryan did nothing in this movie to change many opinions. However, he was cast pretty darn well considering the current way Hal is written. Wesley Snipes isn't exactly a master thespian, but his style and demeanor were perfect for Blade. I can't recall anything else he's done I liked. That was just a role he was born to play.

Could Reynolds have done a better job? With this director's touch and uneven script, probably not. It appears to me a good chunk of this was written for Reynolds and not Hal Jordan. That may be the mismatch many do not like.

I liked this movie quite a bit despite it's flaws. I doubt anything I write can change opinions here, and I'm not trying to. I'm simply offering up alternative ways of considering this film. As a hardcore GL fan, maybe myself and others are blinded. I'm cool with that.

I see Geoff Johns Hal Jordan in this Movie to the Core of the Character. It's what Brought Me to the World of Green Lantern , and my Favorite Super Hero in Modern Comics Today. I've seen Reynolds in Everything he's pretty Much ever done ..., and this was far more Jordan's current Mental Status, than Smart Arse Obnoxious Reynolds.

Does it really bother you that much that I can't stand Reynolds?

            Really?

Huh? Tom Welling was in Dark Knight? I have a problem with getting past Reynolds, too. And GL to me is not the Geoff Johns run, to me its Broome and Kane. Without those two there would only be an Alan Scott GL and he'd be a Golden Age footnote. Warner didn't do this movie solely based on fanboy sales of comics, they did it with an eye towards getting multiple franchises off the ground like Marvel has done. This movie won't warrant a sequel if it only breaks even, which is what it looks like it may do. So expect Warner to either retreat to Batman or try again with something else like the Flash or Hawkman. And for those that watch numbers, GL fell to third place this weekend with a 66% drop from last week, things not looking good for this franchise.

....but GL is enough of a known name that it WILL one day warrant a reboot. Like you said, they want to expand the brand so they'll keep trying. GL is one of DC's big names, and there's what.... a zillion of them to choose from? So they'll keep plugging away. ("No.... we want dark and gritty; use the one with the Moe Howard hair! Wait.... teen hearthrobs are in? Use the younger guy! Hold on; big push for retro? Get the one in the cape!....") You'll see the same with thye inevitable Flash novie.

no doubt there will be a second attempt once the stink of this one fades, just like Superman Returns. The two problems this movie has is a genuine dislike of Ryan Reynolds by a lot of people and a lack of knowledge of the character by the general public. I've heard more than a few people refer to it as Green Hornet.

THats okay, Ive heard the same people call the Green hornet, Green Lantern.

THe Movie doesn't suck. It just failed to live up to your standards. Many people enjoyed it for what it is. A good Comic Book Movie.

I really Liked Reynolds in this movie. He was deffinately type cast, and was a good fit. He is also a draw for the female population that normaly wouldn't attend a "Superhero Movie". I believe he was voted sexiest man alive earlier this year. I doubt it was us guys who voted for him. (I voted for me for the third straight year)

One of the movies obstacles, was two prior super hero movies realeased in the last four weeks. When wa sthe last time we had three in one summer...and we still have a couple to go, not to mention, Transformers, and the Harry Potter Finale....yikes tough summer for a dollar that is allready stretched thin.

I won't know if it sucked or not, I won't see it due to the casting of the lead, he sucks. I'd love to see a well done non-Batman or Superman DC movie. Marvel can get well done movies with its second stringers like Iron Man and Thor, but Warners seems to have a problem in that department. All the box office numbers point to it possibly breaking even, and that won't get it a sequel. The drop to third place this week is going to do nothing for it popularity wise.

Now I think that right there is a big problem for this movie, because GL is not as well known as Batman & Superman. The movie itself is very faithful to the comic and Reynolds is well cast as Hal.

Hmmmm.... interesting points, but I wonder if they’re true. Do people actually hate Reynolds? And does knowledge of the character make that big a difference? I know it does for the “educated” fan base.... but think how many movies come out that you don’t know who the characters are beforehand. Doesn’t seem to make a dif in those instances. Of course, most folks associate the character with the actor anyway. “Hey! It’s another Johnny Depp pirate movie!” So that might play to your first point.

                            >THe Movie doesn't suck.

From what I’ve seen and heard, it doesn’t. At least not any more than any OTHER superhero movie. Which is why I find the hate so weird.

                            >Many people enjoyed it for what it is.

But that’s the thing; they DON’T seem to. Around here, yeah; but most folks here are HUGE superhero fans, and ANY big budget superhero film is awesome.... I guess ‘cos it makes it feel like the genre is “winning.”

Do most folks see this as just another superhero film?

I liked the movie. saw it last night at the drive in. i thought they dragged thje origina bit a little too long but I understand that for the majority of the population, who don't know much about the character, they had to do it. I thought reynolds did a good job in the role. i really hope they do a sequel. without having to do all the back story a sequel should be able to amp up the action

I've got 5 people at work not counting myself that think Reynolds is a tool and won't see anything with him in it. For me he's on a short list along with Sandler, Paris Hilton and Chris Kattan that I will under no circumstances watch.
