The Topless Robot review was pretty spot-on as far as the problems I had with the movie. It seems like most of the Topless Robot's criticisms are of story and plot points as opposed to acting or quality of action sequences/special effects.
Yeah, plot problems have always been the bane of most action movies, but maybe the reason those could be overlooked easier is because there were other things to compensate/distract the audience from those plot failings. If a movie's got super-intense action sequences, revolutionary special effects, and/or some outstanding performances from the actors, the story problems don't get noticed so much.
IMO the action scenes in GL start out strong but fizzle pretty fast, the special effects are great but nothing vastly different from what we've seen before, and I wasn't particularly struck by any of the performances (except for Mark Strong, but he's not in it much). Maybe that's why your coworkers had a hard time with it, there wasn't enough to make up for the poor story.
Just a guess.

>when nobody likes it, it's the movie
Funny thing; a bunch of folks at work have seen it.... some superhero nerds, some not.... and NONE of them liked it. But nobody could quite explain why. So I'm really curious as to why so many folks don't care for it. I can KIND OF understand if the Topless Robot review is correct, but problems like those have plagued every action film since the 80's and nobody seems to care in many cases.

She ranks 13 for me (pretty much a tie for next to last place)As far as love interests for super heroes, I liked her better than most. Certainly more than the movie's Mary Jane, most Lois Lanes, ANY Batman girlfriend (except Catwoman), and various others who have just felt like they were THERE because they had to be to fit Hollywood formula.
Chris
love interest usually just DON"T interest me.
but my favorites (or least disliked)
Dr. Carolyn Fields (incredible hulk TV)
Lois Lane (L&C)
Jean Grey (X1-3) with Cyke/Wolverine
Catwoman (Bat Returns)
Elektra (DD)
Wanda Blake (spawn)
Pepper Potts
Vicky Vale (Batman89)
Dale Arden (Flash gordon)
Steve trevor (WW)
Pam Davidson (GAH)
Beverly (Howard The Duck)
Carol Ferris (GL)Leave a comment:

Ok...I've just seen it...but I'm kinda tired...so I'm taking a nap...will get into detail a bit more later.
It was not bad...some things I liked...and some I didn't.
I'll just leave you with one thing though...
Anybody else got annoyed by Hal Jordan's girlfriend?
Ok...that's it for now...I'll be back later...

Also, for those looking for the John Stewart cameo, he's standing directly behind Tom during the dogfight scene.Leave a comment:

I gotta go with the critics here.
if 1 or 2 people don't like it, that can be easily written off as a fluke, or personal preference.
when nobody likes it, it's the movie.
these people are paid to review movies, and their opinions hold weight. I am of the 'I will definitely make up my own opinion after having seen it crowd' which is exactly what I did here.
I wanted to love it.
I didn't. I did like it, but I think the fans deserve much better, and am sorry to see that this is what they got, and they're so shocked that it isn't good, that they're doing everything they can to try to spin it positively.
but it's not a great movie. It's a good movie, and if you saw it for a matinee price, you got your money's worth.
I would put it on par with Superman Returns. Definitely not as bad as Steel, Batman and Robin, or Catwoman, but no better than Superman Returns.Leave a comment:

Well, I won't begrudge you your opinion Number 6...but I enjoyed Green Lantern very much and will buy the Bluray the day it comes out.

True, but Thor is a fantasy movie, and while I'm not a big Thor comic fan, Thor is a much better, much more fun movie than Green Lantern. Thor has a more coherant script, better character development and solid acting which enhances the "fun-ness" of it.
I don't expect or even want all comic book movies to be like X-men: First Class or the Nolan Batman movies. But I also don't think being a "fun, lighthearted, fantasy" movie gives a movie like Green Lantern a free pass to have weak script, poor character development and mediocre acting.Leave a comment:
