Ok i'm not sure if i'm understanding this completely. There's 4 points holding the globe ring now with the aluminum type one and it looks like 8 points with the other, two pieces each at N,S,W,E. Are you planning on cutting out, eliminating two points/pieces that hold the globe and only having two pieces at west/east holding the ring? If thats the case, are you raising or lowering the one side to get the tilt you want? If you are lowering one side, you can, i think get by with no welding on the aluminum type one.The other one is a different story. If you are raising a side, then that creates a whole new set of problems. So which way are you planning? -
Yep,3" looks much better.Whats your plans on the globe tweakage?Leave a comment:

Going by your tips...I did just that...and seems like 3" letters will look better than 4" on that 16" globe/ring across dimensions...I'd just go with DAILY PLANET like in your pics.As far as the letter size,i did a quick measuring of your first pic,i'm sure they all vary some but its aproximately 4 inches and the letters are about 3/4 to one inch which is 1/4 the width of the globe.Your globe is 16inches so 1/4 of that is 4 inches.I would draw(rough sketch) it out full scale and see which size letters either 3in or 4in look most like whatever pic you are going to base this on.

Looks like I'll be going with 3" letters...
Your advise was awesome...much appreciated...

You sound like you're putting a lot of heart and soul (and money and hard work) into this project, Hector, but it sounds like it's also a blast for you, which is what's really important. I can't wait to start seeing more finished stuff!
Just be careful with torch, dude!!!Leave a comment:

Yeah, my thinking on the lighted globe i posted, was you would have to lose the wooden stand and go with a smaller base for it. But i see now you already have the globes covered
.Those are some cool looking globes, they are going to look great when you get them done.

OK...here we go...
I bought two globes (one just arrived, the other is in transition)...both with metal rings...both are different but with the same art deco look...my plan is to make two DAILY PLANET globes...and both with BROADWAY fonts...I want that Metropolis look, lol.
They need modifications of course...I'm going to tilt the rings...to have that sloping Saturn look...cutting and welding will be required...not worrying about the paint at this point...have to tweak that damn bloody metal first...

I already have two globes for it...I'm looking for the "industrial" art deco metal look...you'll see when I post those pictures soon...but hey...that's a nice one...but I need it more compact...remember...it's going atop my six foot high glass cabinet...

Yeah,i hear ya Hector,i dont dont like places like that, where you have jump through a bunch of hoops either. You're better off going locally or through LaserMego.I'm curious what you are planning for the globe. After seeing MegoScott's lighted one, which is very cool looking,i'm imagining a larger scale like you are planning, but lighted also, would be the ultimate in coolness. Heres a lighted globe i found on Ebayhttp://www.ebay.com/itm/Lighted-Glob...item35b7d2c920,figure out how to paint or cover it in a translucent gold and you're done with the globe part. Then its just a matter of getting your ring and letters made in the size you need ,attaching them to the globe and Done.Just throwing some more ideas out there.I don't like sites where you have to email/call them a quote...that means they are expensive as heck...I know...because I did that with a couple of other companies that offer similar services...the price I was given...almost knocked me off my feet...lol. Plus, you don't get a direct quote...a representative has to go over the order with you...lol.
I found one that gives out the prices right then and there...and discovered they were the most reasonably priced custom letters company...I'm going with them.
However...I do much appreciate the heads up...thanks for helping me out...

There's a sign/letter mom & pops store here in Oakland (they make lots of custom letters except laser cutting)...
Home
They really specialize making these types, not laser cutting...
products & services
However...I learned that they themselves order the laser cut letter from here...
Aluminum, Bronze Brass Letters by Gemini
So I'll be paying for company prices but the local store's fee...no thank you, lol.
