I would really like a Mego style Dr. Who.... and would buy him, and lots of Dr Who characters......to me, Dr Who is much more familiar than Dark Shadows, and those are comming out soon......
Who toys sell quite well, even here in the States.
Limited runs, they'd sell big especially since there is already an infastructure of Doctor Who online stores to meet the international demands. I suspect the only hang-up would be getting it officially licensed.
There's a market for it. Certainly much more than a lot of the stuff that's getting the EMCE treatment as of late.
I think it would be good. Especially with the popularity of the new doctor who series (hoping that Matt Smith doesn't kill it). They could have all 11 with companions.
While DW would be an interesting property, they haven't really sold off the charts. TRU had pretty much all the stuff, they had, on clearance at one point and the 5 inch molded figures are selling at the prices the 8 inch EMCE figures do, and higher in most cases. Most likely due to the license cost. I still don't think any major retailer has jumped on the DW band wagon, and I doubt an 8 inch line selling in the area of $30-$35 would be popular by any means. Very few US children have any idea what Dr Who is, and the US market has shown there's a limited market at best. The UK popularity and large character base supports the reason why the license is the price it is, but I'm not sure I've seen the US market make it a sure thing for a 5 inch format much less a higher cost 8 inch format.
TRU only ever carried Doctor Who in limited quantities and they ended up with tons of the bad figures that they couldn't sell... Limited run Doctor figures would sell like gangbusters.
Especially online.
It's not a question of if the market is there. It's proven that a market is there for Who toys. I think the only question is license cost.
But I mean, it'll sell vastly better than Twilight Zone or Dark Shadows. That's a given. But those licenses probably cost pennies to what the Who license would cost.
Those licenses probably cost pennies to what the Who license would cost.
Exactly.
The license cost vs. the amount of figures you would sell would put too much of a financial weight on the final retail price, which would push away any of the cost affected market that may have purchased the product at a lower retail. It would be a huge money investment to produce the line with a limited chance of a big return any at all. Maybe if it included the UK license though I would bet that's a separate, and probably higher priced license in itself.
We were talking to the BBC for months about it, and they could not
get out of their own red tape. We did everything we could to make
them - met every request of the BBC - and we still could not get
a definitive answer.
I expect to hear from them in six months when the Mego resurgence is
in full swing and someone at the BBC gets the idea "we should make
Dr. Who megos" and start the process all over again.
I take it they'd be available in stores in the UK then? Does that mean other EMCE stuff would be too? And if so in the UK, how about the rest of Europe?

Hopefully the BBC will jump on board at some point in the future!
Thanks for the heads up Doc. Always dig it when you pull back the veil for us.
I totally understand if you can't answer certain questions, but I figure it can't help to ask... were you guys pitching contemporary versions, classic or both?
To me, 8" Tom Baker, Leela and Cyberman Re-Megos would be the no brainers to start with, but I'd totally get that David Tennant and co would be potentially more accessible to a modern audience.
Doctor Who has so many wonderful non-human creatures like the Daleks, that I'm sure that would be a challenge given the extra license (Terry Nation still owns them right?) and tooling that would be required.

It would be truly awesome if you did. Every Doctor, companion, and all the aliens in 8" scale? Joy!
Maybe with Moffat in charge, there's a better chance. He's old enough to remember the Denys Fisher toy lines.
