Non-Mego collectors buying them on the appeal of the license (Superheroes and Trek) and not just because they are Megos. But becoming Mego fans and collectors in the process.

    That's my wild theory anyways.
The only problem I see with that theory is the suggested $20 price. Mego fans and collectors will have no problem paying that (OK, some might), but paying $20 for something you don't know on a whim? I doubt it

Perhaps... but a premiere figure at a premium price deserves prestige packaging

Working in marketing for almost two decades, I can tell you with almost 99.9% assuredly that Mattel probably doesn't care about buyers of these toys becoming "MEGO" fans. They want them to be Mattel, Retro-action, paying customers/and-if-fans-of-Mattel-too-ok-then.

The whole round-table meeting for the name change was more than likely due to a bunch of suits discussing what they can align under this brand that has "legs", and which will allow them (Mattel) to propel more items into the stores for 2010 (getting purchasing agents committed to placing orders at Toy Fair) under the retro-action theme.

The Super-hero dolls (retro "mego" toys.. action figures I know) are just a small part of some master strategy, and will probably be viewed, and treated, as such. Hopefully enough people will be buying them for the line to survive.. for a few years at least.

Just because Green Arrow is $20 on matty collector that doesn't mean that's what toysrus will sell them for.

Corporate Mattel, agreed, more than likely not. The people working for Mattel that put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into the figures is something else.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

I don't think $20 is unreasonable at all for this in light of the fact that their mass market price for a smaller DCUC figure with sculpted on clothes is approaching $13 and up. A closer comparison might be DC Direct figures since they do smaller runs and are niche figures, but even those cost $16-18 each.

Can't argue with that, we'll know this spring.
But since we don't have TRU anymore here I'll have to get these online and with shipping added I'm looking at $30 per figure easy

Personally speaking, my boys are as excited about this as I am and are waiting with baited breath to see if Batman will have a removable mask. To answer your question: SOME kids will most DEFINITELY be begging Mom and Dad for these.

That's also why you're seeing so much kvetching about the packaging.. who's a more picky and particular lot than adult toy collectors?

In my opinion they need to put out commercials like they did in the 70's. That is what got me hooked and begging my parents to buy them.

                      ..
Just showed the card to my boys. They LOVE the pictures.

I just spent several minutes disecting what is so unappealing about the card.

The Retro Action name I can live with. The white reveal line is good. The head shots on the front are good. The pix on the back are poorly laid out. We are all in agreement space was left for logos and so on (Mattel logo, DC logo, Blurb about the WGSH original figures, etc...) However, they are still haphazardly thrown on the card.

The Green Arrow generic font in red: Just POOR design and a bad call. The GA logo NEEDS to be there. No excuse for it being a generic red font.

I've shown it to my wife and boys and the concensus is the background color is a poor choice. It takes the good points of the layout and makes them moot. The color is so distracting, everything else gets lost. Anthony's GA box is a home run all around. This should be the example the Mattel folks use. You could even "weather" Anthoony's box and it would still look awesome.

What really gets my goat is someone was probably paid a ludicrous amount of money to "design" this card.

Don't get me wrong, I and both of my boys are beyond excited and thrilled WGSH are back. I will buy them no matter if they were in a plain zipper lock sandwich bag.

I read your whole post, but this is what I chose to quote from it.

For all the *****ing in numerous threads....this is all that will really count.

That and kids making enough of a stink for ole' Dad to break out the wallet......just like when we we kids.

Children of Megoheads don't qualify for the objective, overall kid picture..

It almost looks like they scanned an old card they got off eBay and then dragged it to photo shop and added their stuff to it.
